There appears to be a couple of discrepancies with the forum this morning. In this thread https://www.SimSig.co.uk/Forum/ThreadView/50458 the latest post list shows 1 reply with the latest post by 9pN1SEAp but when the thread is opened the latest post is by Hap. In this thread https://www.SimSig.co.uk/Forum/ThreadView/50459 the list shows the latest post by headshot119 but when the thread is opened the latest post is by 9pN1SEAp Both threads show latest post at 7.14 this morning Last edited: 05/02/2020 at 10:32 by Dick Reason: None given Log in to reply |

It looks like it has been split off https://www.SimSig.co.uk/Forum/ThreadView/50458 into a new thread by a moderator

It was caused by me moderating out some off topic posts into another thread.

Hmm, surely the forum indexing should be able to cope a bit more gracefully with that.

If I remember correctly, since the homepage redesign the forum is now using some custom-written software. I think Geoff mentioned that the advantage of that is better integration with the rest of the homepage and the unified Simsig user account system (one account for the forum, the Wiki, the shop/licensing, file uploads, the game list and whatever other functionality is available), which apparently can be somewhat of a pain to get right when using off-the-shelf software. The disadvantage is that you have to re-implement all functionality starting from scratch, so you'll likely get some bugs and missing features that have long ago been fixed in off-the-shelf forum software. Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick. Pretty much that. The old website was based on Joomla (and Wordpress suffers the same issues) where 3rd party component developers often end up causing data duplication and functionality. Writing the website from the ground up normalises the data and has much better integration - but is a lot of work. And forums, as it turns out, are a lot tougher to program than you might think. I didn't even implement many of the things that the old forum used because nobody ever used them and just caused bloat.
