Any suggestions on where I can get a SVG viewer that's compatible with VISTA? The Adobe one, while still available, is no longer supported and every search seems to end up pointing to it. Firefox is supposed to have an integral one but I can't get it to work. So any ideas? Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Have you looked here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Vector_Graphics No personal experience, but it looks as though GIMP might do it. Regards, Neil Log in to reply |

Gimp can (but it's not really that good), Firefox should view them, as should Google Chrome and Apple's Safari, as far as editing goes, I tend to use Inkscape (open source and free), Ben Log in to reply |

Thanks, The particular thing I want to view is embedded in a web site's web page, whether that's reason for the difficulty I don't know. There is a developer's tool for drawing scale maps of the Sims that uses SVG and I recall Clive fixed it so that it does work with Firefox save that you can't scroll around it like I used to be able to do with the Adobe one- but it's a while since I used that because of the difficulties I had. Apparently Firefox 4 (Beta) works quite well so I'll give it a go. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Windows: right-click the SVG file -> open with... -> choose default program -> choose Firefox from the list (browsers Chrome and Safari also can do, Internet Explorer uses the Adobe viewer) Linux: right-click the SVG file -> open with other application -> and then again choose a browser. Wine IE also works, as this browser is Firefox-based. AJP in games Log in to reply |

Thanks but there is no SVG file per se the web page is "rendered in SVG format". Have now tried FF 4.0 to no avail. The SVG file I created for Edinburgh displays OK within a FF window but then it always has. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Well inkscape has resolved the svg developer file issue- so that's a bonus. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

If the page is rendered as svg image, the best thing is that you save it as a file. (instead of clicking in the link, right-click and select save as). In this way you can then try to open the file with many programs. As far as I know inkscape is a very powerful program and you can both view and edit svg file with it. Actually inkscape is made to edit file, so it is a big program, not just a viewer, and it can take some time to run it. With inkscape also came a smaller program called inkview which allow you to see an svg file (you can also view a slideshow made from many svg images. However I am not ale to pan or zoom with inkview) I know there is a inkscape version for window but I can not tell you if it works or not with Vista. One of the problems I had with viewing and editing of svg files is that many programs do not support all the features of the svg standard. If the file has some directives that are not supported by the program (or plugin) you are using, the program could display the image incorrectly or it can just display nothing. If you are experiencing problem in seeing an svg file with the program you are using, try to open a simpler svg file or to use a different program. Log in to reply |
