A friend and I were playing Liverpool Street today and he saw this at signal 120, which happens to be automatic, but I suspect it’s neither sim- nor signal-specific. A signal failure occurred which left yellow inoperative… but double yellow still worked! That seems rather unusual. Is that representative of any common real-world failure, or just a missing piece of logic in the simulation or core code regarding the sharing of lamps between those aspects?

I'm sure there's a Sleep & Tea bod on here who'll correct me, but as a bobby I can't think of any failure mode that would give YY but fail Y.

Is there any chance you have a saved game? I can't see any way that that can happen. Internally, the code records whether the red, main yellow, green, and subsidiary aspects are working or failed. The only way that information is used is in the "is lamp proved" test, which (among other things) causes the signal symbol to go dark. The signal aspect is used to decide which of the four lamps to check when deciding if the lamp is proved. Both Y and YY test the state of the main yellow. Hmm, if that signal was custom drawn for some reason, the sim author might have drawn the wrong appearance for a lamp failed YY. But that seems unlikely in this case. Log in to reply |

Hmm, were you playing multiplayer? Was he client or server? Did you see the same thing?

LivSt doesn't have any custom drawn signals.

I looked at a few saves, and I can’t seem to reproduce the problem. Signal 120 does seem to have some odd behaviour, but I think it’s sim-specific and certainly not related to a lamp failure so I’ll post in the proper forum. Sorry for the waste of time!

Actually, upon deeper investigation, I reloaded the save game and checked the incident report, and also unzipped the save file and looked in the XML, and there definitely is a failure quoted for signal 120 which has not been fixed yet (<object>S120</object> appears in the <failures> element, and the incident report shows a failure in the Cambridge Heath area which has not yet been reported fixed). However, in the TSIG element for S120, I don’t see any indication of anything actually having failed! Save file attached. Note that I did open up the incident control panel and highlight some signals just in an attempt to find out which signal had failed and in what way, but I didn’t actually operate any of the controls in there, just selected some signals to look at them. I noticed the incident control panel for signals doesn’t have all the possible failures in it (e.g. failures of individual lamps are absent); is it possible that merely looking at the signal in the incident control panel caused the failure to be erased?

Ticking or unticking the "lamp proved" box, even if you put it back, will wipe the failure state (an unticked lamp proved box sets all the failure flags on the signal). Log in to reply |

I was initially expecting not to even have to click on a signal name in the list—I expected to see a red-tinted background, same as for TC failures—but when I didn’t see one, I clicked on a few signal names to see what controls were available, but that’s it. To answer an earlier question: this occurred in a multiplayer session. I was the host and operating the Great Eastern panel, while my friend, who noticed the issue, was a client and operating West Anglia. Log in to reply |
