A lot of people would recommend Royston as good for an absolute beginner.
No doubt you'll get quite a few other suggestions.
Once you get the hang of things there is a list of sims for beginners at the link below:

Everything that you make will be useful - providing it's made of chocolate.

Salisbury is good for one person especially with 2 platforms shut and the 1988 timetable, plenty of loco movements and forward planning required but not overwhelming.

I'd also suggest that if you're new and you're experimenting and not wishing to purchase any simulations at this stage, there are many older donationware sims which you can look through and use for as long as you like, with in some cases many user contributed timetables available (Although I'd suggest not starting with these for a new user).

I will also add, don't be afraid to pause or slow down the sim if things start to get out of control. This is far more satisfying than getting in a mess, getting frustrated and quitting

Finally, when you're ready to purchase your first sim, there is a new user discount code, I think its "newuser" (I'm sure I'll be corrected on this), and once your first sim is purchased, a discount code of "multibuy" for when you buy more than one sim to a time.

I believe the general donation older sims have been discontinued, but there are plenty of free sims in the loader that are worth a look.

There are still many donationware sims on the loader, ranging from simple like Royston to complex like Kings Cross.

Something like North East Wales is a good candidate for a relatively inexperienced single player donationware sim. Not so many trains as to be overbearing but enough variety to learn SimSig.
