I'm making this post as I have noticed some irregularities with Sydney Bridge Jn (as it was formerly known) First off, for all eras up to 2005 Crewe Sydney Br was under the control of Sandbach PSB (SH). For trains leaving the station DN this means that the route should set to SH75 control signal, not MS4029. And on the UP, approach signals into Crewe should be SH68 (control), SH73 (control), CE154, etc. Previous to 2005 there was a set of facing and trailing double-track x-overs between the independents and the 'fast' lines at Sydney Bridge. And there was a GF (later removed) behind SH68 which is that that is also a control signal. For all intensive purposes, this is just a signal number issue as none of the TCs were changed and none of the track under the control of Crewe PSB was altered. CE154 was almost directly in-front of the facing-end of the UP independent > UP fast x-over at Sydney Bridge. As such when Sandbach closed, the timing point was kept and the times for Sydney Bridge Jn (later Sydney Bridge) was for when the train passed CE154 signal (officially confirmed by a train planner with Northern). And with the recent alterations it was just renamed to more accurately reflect where the timing point actually was. (I'm suspecting on the DN that Sydney Bridge was timed for passing MS4029, but I have no official confirmation of this.) I've included signal number plans from 1959 (opening of Sandbach PSB), 1985 (opening of Crewe PSB) and a screenshot of Sydney Bridge Jn (as it appeared on the diagram) in the early 00s. Just some things I've noticed and that I think people may find useful! Post has attachments. Thanks this detailed bit of information. I totally forgot about the double cross overs that used to be there!, same with Sandbach PSB.

I'm a volunteer at Crewe North Jn signal box so we know Sandbach PSB very well haha as it was our Manchester neighbour until 1985! 7-5-5, closing of comment Log in to reply The following user said thank you: HST125Scorton |

Thanks for the interesting information. I see from the signalboxes list on the website of Phil Deaves - http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/signal/signal_boxess.shtm - that for Sandbach he says last train was 11-Dec-2005 but official closure was 11-Mar-2006. My collection of notices (approx. 60 from South Wales, Midlands and western counties) doesn't include anything for that area though so I would be none the wiser as to the Sandbach PSB layout were it not for the diagrams you attached: thank you for sharing them. Cheers, Dave Last edited: 15/09/2024 at 21:34 by DaveHarries Reason: None given Log in to reply |
