This subject seems to be going of track by quite a bit but anyway I'm enjoying listening to everybodys first signal box experience.

My Dad told me that he was once allowed to signal a train during a visit to the still existant (in structure, anyway) box just south of Cheltenham Spa station. That was in 1959, when he was 10. As for me I was once allowed to replace two levers after the passage of a freight train but I promised the signalman I would keep my mouth shut as to the location of the box where that was. He simply told me what levers to move, and when to move them. OOI, when did the box just south of Cheltenham Spa close? Dave Log in to reply |

At the age of about 8, I remember being invited up into the old Cambridge South box by a signalman who saw me and my dad train spotting on plat 1. And it involved crossing the main lines! No big levers to pull, but strange little drawbars with handles on. I remember pulling off a shunting semaphore adjacent to Hills Road bridge. All long gone now with the advent of colour lights and electrification! Also knew someone who worked at the freight office - showed us the TOPS computer one evening. Amazing stuff for a young spotter - power reports, consists, even the location of BR's ferries (class 99, I think). Log in to reply |
