Wiki page explaining error messages with examples? 25/11/2011 at 00:18 #23576 | |

Is there an existing Wiki page listing all (or just the most common) error messages that might appear in the Messages box? I have searched the Wiki and Forum without finding one. If there isn't one, if anyone has a list of the (core?) error messages that appear in all sims, would they post it here or pm me as I would like to start one for beginners, lavishly illustrated with examples that more experienced simmers know to avoid. I have found a couple of nice tutorials such as this one on Wait for Overlap, but the more examples (preferably in simpler sims), the easier it will be for newbies to understand what they are doing wrong. First-up I think what you so eloquently describe as "error messages" are actually 'interlocking messages'(?). Second, as far as I'm aware there is not a page on the Wiki listing what the 'interlocking messages' mean, so with that in mind I've created this page for that very purpose. Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for. Thanks for replying and setting up a page. Yes, most of the error messages that frustrate us newbies are interlocking error messages (SimSig doesn't praise you for getting it right!), only the newbie wouldn't know to call them that. He would regard them as error messages then get frustrated when searching the Wiki and Forum for "error message" brings up nothing. So I think the word "error" should come into it and plan to add this in the text somewhere. Of course, there are other error messages in Simsig such as "couldn't find timetable", etc. Maybe one of the devs has a list of interlocking messages to speed progress on this page. I have added four interlocking messages that I can think of of the top of my head. (On another note I've just hit Saltley junction.) "Passengers for New Lane, should be seated in the rear coach of the train " - Opinions are my own and not those of my employer Log in to reply |

See that within a couple of hours we have a nice Wiki page full of detail about what all the messages mean. Certainly shows what we can do if all of us do a little bit.

I just noticed that although the Wiki path to this page is usertrack:interlockingmessages, there seems no corresponding link to it on the Usertrack page. Anyone figure out why?

Succinct, not too much detail or explanations - ideal for someone trying to find their way through the basics, I'd have said. If you want to let me know what you're less happy about (or simply want to know more about how/why, either for your own interest or to deepen your explanations) I'd be pleased to help. Anyone figure out why?The page you've linked to just needs editing to add the link. Initially I wasn't sure about where on that page the link should go, but as with many things I've taken a second look after a good nights sleep and can probably see what could be done. Will do it now. Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for. Seems the Interlocking Messages page has gone from being Interlocking Messages to Interlocking Messages & ARS Messages. Unless I'm mistaken, Interlocking and ARS are completely different. I'm thinking either the interlocking and ARS messages need separating into their own separate pages, or the page linked to need separating into different tables, one for ARS Messages, one for Interlocking Messages, and so on, then moving to a new page for all messages you're likely to experience. Either way, something needs doing. Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for. Thanks UKTrainMan for the heads-up. I was responsible for bundling them all together. Not knowing much about ARS yet, I'd appreciate it if you either post a list of those messages which are exclusively ARS here or pm me, or split the existing page into two separate ones (I'm happy to save you the trouble if you send me a list). (added) Since then I've created a separate ARS messages page and transferred two obvious ones to it from the Interlocking messages page. Last edited: 29/11/2011 at 02:52 by maxand Log in to reply |

I've also just discovered a whole table of Routesetting Status Messages on the main ARS page, none of which appear on the Interlocking messages list. So I've appended a link to this table to the ARS messages page to avoid unnecessary duplication.

If there is a table of messages on the main ARS page, then just add to that. No need to create another page!
