When trying to type out a relatively long message in a multiplayer game, you either have to abbreviate hugely or remove punctuation in order to get the message in one line. In my opinion, an small feature which I think would help would be to allow any length of message in the message box, but then for SimSig to automatically split the message into its maximum line length and send as multiple lines if necessary?

Would this be a good idea, or not?

i have noticed that there is a caracter limit on the message box but this is rightly so. if you actually listen carefully, all the scrolly sims start pingin when you continue typing and there isn;t any room for it.
the easist thing to do which i've done myself and see alot of people do in multiplayer is you type a message untill you get the ping, send that and then just continue typing in the next window. its not that hard to press enter and f10 every 80 caracters (or the limit might be a bit more than that)
just imagine that the f10 window is a typewritter

The only limit is in the edit box - there's none in the protocol. I don't know why Geoff put the limit in there; he'll have to comment.

Personally just shorten messages to minimum...or if desperate use shrt hnd (short hand). If I get a call from a driver to report a delay to their train, I'll sometimes (in-fact, probably always) send a message out about it and often copying from the phone call (or sticky) means it doesn't fit so again a reworking of the words is needed.

Example (from the Cross simulation):

5E82-1 delayed at Harringay Rev Sdg (K421/419/81) due to the wrong kind of food trolley, expected to depart at about 00:50 . Do you wish to replace signal S421 back to danger?

becomes

5E82-1 delayed Harringay Rev til 00:50 - wrong kind of food trolley(!)

which I've just tested in the message window and it fits with 10 characters spare.

Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for.

To get around this issue the SimSig teamspeak server could be used for multiplayer games. From my previous gaming experience with other, mainly first person shooters teamspeak is a brilliant piece of software to use, wish it was used more in multiplayer games.
