A thought just occurred to me whilst playing the excellent 1977 TT for Euston.... Would a TRTS actually have been given for a loco that is backing out of a terminus or running around its train at a station such as Sheffield ? I'm not suggesting any inaccuracies in the sims - I'm just curious as to how things would be done in real life. Cheers. Log in to reply |

Not sure what the rules were for Euston or Sheffield however on my KX 55 timetable the platform working arrangements booklet does not give times for engine run rounds, only loco's next working/destination. I therefore decided to be a bit nasty and put a time in for an engine run round with the proviso that it should not leave its arrival platform until the arrival of its next working at another platform. Which could, depending on lateness or other mishaps, cause no end of fun and games. With regards to the Euston 77 timetable, I note that some workings, are 'ready to leave' as soon as the run round loco has joined. Whilst this is quite possible I doubt if the carriage cleaning staff would appreciate trains arriving one after the other and out of sequence. Similarly, the sleeper workings would not depart before the passengers had received their fair quota of sleep which usually meant that they were allowed to stay in their compartments until 7.30am in most cases. In the 77 timetable they would have ended up having breakfast in the carriage sidings :) Just noticed that this has already been suggested here http://www.SimSig.co.uk/index.php?option=com_kunena&func=view&catid=75&id=27085&Itemid=145#27263 Last edited: 20/01/2012 at 13:04 by Quizman Log in to reply The following user said thank you: Kage |

The one movement of this type we have remaining at Paddington (the evening sleepers to Penzance) brings this issue up. The loco that pulls the ECS stock into the station is uncoupled at the blocks, and returns light to the Oak once the sleeper has departed. After the sleeper has gone and the signal has turned to red behind the train, the usual procedure is for the loco to follow the train down the platform and stop at the same signal. So far as I know, the platform staff do not give another TRTS to the signaller, who gives the route to the loco to depart of his own accord. The only occasion on which this would not happen is if the light loco was not ready to depart immediately after the train, a circumstance which would usually be reported to the signaller before the sleeper train departs. If this happens, then a phone call to the signaller to say that the loco is now ready to depart (usually from the driver) serves as the TRTS, and he will pull the signal off when a route is available. The morning ECS stock (off the up sleeper) does not suffer from this issue, as the loco which hauls the train from Penzance goes to the Oak dead, coupled to the back of the train. This loco is then used to shunt the stock into the carriage shed, the leading loco having been detached and run into another road on arrival. Thanks for the comments / answers. Not having worked on the railway I sort of guessed that a TRTS would not have been given for a loco departing behind another service at a terminus. Lurking on this forum as I have it seemed that TRTS indicated to a signaller that station duties were complete (e.g. all doors closed) and the train was therefore ready to depart. Doors closed wouldn't apply to a light loco hence my guess that a TRTS wouldn't be given. Lazzer, your comment about the loco following a departing train down the platform certainly fits in with what I remember when I used to go trainspotting at Euston back in the late 70s. As for whether the platform staff gave a TRTS I wouldn't know - hence my original post. Log in to reply |

I suspect that SimSig sees a train which has no rule applying to it standing at a red signal at the appointed departure time with nothing between it and the signal, at a station with TRTS installed and therefore generates a TRTS indication, irrespective of what type of train it is. I have had Class 6's give TRTS before when they have been booked to stop for crew change, even though that isn't generally prototypical either. In Euston, unless there is any advice to the Signalman to the contrary from the loco crew, I would imagine they would get the light engine out of the way as soon as the train it brought in has cleared the pointwork in the throat to free up the platform for another arrival.
