I guess not so much a 'crime' scene, but just to preserve evidence for the RAIB.

No, but it seems (from posts earlier in this thread) that the points in question were a crossover from slow to fast, or vice versa, that should be taken at 15mph. Normally for this sort of move, the signals are "approach control", i.e. it is held at red until the train arrives, so that the driver is going slow enough for the next move. The signal then clears with the appropriate route indicator. I guess since the loco had no wagons or coaches, it could accelerate pretty quickly, so it managed to get to a speed in excess of 15 by the time the crossover was reached, and just jumped the track. It was lucky for the driver that the loco didn't actually start to turn and topple over.
