Currently eyeing up this project, but have come across a stumbling block. There are a number of trains shown as E420 "TEST", I assume these were Class 91s being given a chance to stretch their legs prior to full introduction of the class? I was more curious as to the train formation used on the test trains, and also the E420 service trains as well, as I understand the the Mark 4 coaches & DVTs were delivered late? Finally, was the Class 89 still in use on ECML expresses at this time? Thanks to anyone that can provide answers :cheer: When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Formation for the 91 test trains was Class 91 + MK3s + Class 43. The 43s that where used had buffers fitted to the front to allow the 91 to run round and run blunt end first if there was an issue with the multiple working gear. Hope that helps Paul. I have seen pictures of a few formations, One with the power car. And one like peter said, Class 91 loco pulling about 4 or 5 intercity livery white roofed mk1's

Timetabled passenger workings or test trains? The TT'd passenger workings before the DVTs were delivered were as Karl (headshot119) has stated. As far as I recall, they only worked between KX and Leeds as the DVTs were delivered before the electrification of the route to Newcastle was implemented. I was on the first electric northbound into Newcastle in late 1990/early 1991 and that had a DVT on the back. I recall the 89/91s also worked a service to Peterborough in the evening. That may have been the train composed of coaching stock.

The one I had was definitely Kings Cross to York because I was going home for the weekend. Whether it was in the timetable or an unadvertised additional that I happened across I can't remember- save that it was a service train but for some reason a "wiggly line" timetabled train comes to mind. Cant decide if Ive found the same working as other people involving a class 91 + MK1s. On the 23/09/1989 91003 did a Staff Special between York Kings Cross, the photo Ive found of the working shows that have turned the 91 to face south. The MK1s are from the charter section of Intercity and have white roofs, but the picture shows at least 7 on; train still exiting Wood Green Tunnel. The book also says that the launch of MKIV coaching stock took place in October 1989, but with a press special on 20/09/1989. The first 10 sets where due to be in service by May 1990 between London & Leeds (summer timetable change?)
