Permissive Platform Working - Exeter St Davids 22/06/2012 at 18:42 #33257

2F53 arrives in Exeter St Davids from Paignton and is scheduled to arrive in P1 for its onward departure to Exmouth. Soon after 2F55 arrives from Barnstaple and is scheduled to also arrive in P1. As 2F53 is still awaiting correct departure time I have to signal 2F55 behind it (correctly). In the scenario I am presently running I have to leave P3 clear as I have a late running SWT service from Waterloo at Exeter Central.
However, I am unable to get 2F55 to clear Red Cow LC thus preventing me from raising the barriers - and also preventing me from route the late running South West Trains arrival into P3

Any ideas?

The two trains combined are either too long for the platform, or the first one has stopped in the wrong place.

Try resetting the timetables of both trains so that the stopping positions of them at Exeter St Davids is set to "Near End Exact". If after doing this they still hang out, then they are too long.

If I understand you correctly 2F55 has landed at P1 so the permissive working (call-on) worked. But you have the tail end of 2F55 still on the approach TC which does not allow you to access P3 nor raise the barriers.

Do you know the lengths of the respective trains so we can see if they actually fit the platform. Platform 1 is 360m (knock off a wee bit) say 350m usable.

If the lengths are OK then what I suspect is that 2F53 is stopping in the wrong place so blocking 2F53. Stopping point can be adjusted in the timetable either by a straight "near-end" and/or adjusting the distance figure. The Wiki page does not really cover how that works, hopefully someone will be able to better explain it- timetable writing using that feature is not something I've done for a while.

If 2F53 has already arrived before adjusting its stop position via the TT, try 'shunt forward', assuming it's facing the correct way (down?) and it should shuffle along within the platform; 2F55 will probably need the same as it thinks it's already stopped within ESD station.

I think I've had a, very minor, downside to using "shunt forward" and that is a tendency for the driver to ring in every xx minutes until departure time. I think you may need to reset his "current location", via F2.

I haven't had any extra calls from drivers from my experience. Once I've shuffled the trains down the platform, F2 states that the train is stopped at Exeter St Davids as per before the "shuffling".

Maybe the drivers don't like me?
