I don't think Tim (UKTM) actually applied to this job - he was just letting SimSig people know about it.

The 'grade' of a signalling job usually relates to the intensity of the train service you have to deal with, and also reflects the pay. A grade 1 job is something like a crossing keeper and is paid the lowest of the signalling grade, and a Grade 9 job is a busy signalling centre (such as London Victoria (Central/Brighton-side) or Liverpool Street (Great Eastern-side) and is paid much more. I can never find the pay scale anywhere, so can't give you a run-down of what grade job pays what money.

The Signaller's Assessment gives you a result which can restrict the jobs you can apply for. A pass at level 3 means you are not restricted and can apply for *any* vacancy that appears. A pass at level 1 or 2 restricts the signalling jobs you can apply for, based upon the 'grade' of each job.

The grading of signalboxes is actually done using the Hay System of job evaluation, which is not a railway specific tool and - perversely perhaps - does not take into account the number of trains per shift or the intensity of the timetable. The original post in this topic shows a salary of £20329 p/a which is signaller grade 1, so I suspect that the position was actually at Spittal level crossing.

Mfcooper: if you want a copy of an up to date pay scale, please send me a pm with your email address.
