Bristol Sim - Olympic Extras 03/08/2012 at 20:50 #34617

Hi all,

Just to say that I am currently trying to pick out all the extra trains that serve Bristol and which are being laid on for the Olympics. I so far have several so I will carry on looking for a bit.

I picked out one interesting one. These extras give arrival times only, no departure times. I am noting the arrival times: it could be an interesting excuse for a Bristol Olympics TT so I will advise when I have got the gen and then supply the times I have for anyone who fancies compiling an Olympics TT for the Bristol sim.

There is one loco hauled set (Cl 67) booked for a Paddington to Cardiff, apparently leaving at 0200 but I can't find such in Open Train Times, but it's sitting in Old Oak anyway.

The 0705 Cardiff to Weymouth might be arrival times only as it's Pick Up Only from Cardiff right through to Maiden Newton, which will sound odd on the annoucement at Cardiff as advertised non-stop to Maiden Newton!!!

I'm doing a August 2012 WTT for Kings Cross/Cambridge/Peterborough areas at the moment then I'll probably move onto the Western sims, but of someone else wants to do Bristol August 2012, it'll save me a job and I can do neighbouring sim WTT's for those not covered yet.

I'll also pop down to the local station (Trowbridge) Tuesday and Wednesday to see what this 0705 Cardiff - Weymouth is formed of.

The Cl67 is a standby train which runs ECS from Wembley to Padd, and sits on standby if required. Formed 67 & 8 Riviera Mk1 & 2's

I don't know what is forming it but the other day I did see more out-iof-use rolling stock than usual parked in the siding at Bristol TM next to Platform 1.

On an interesting note the current Weymouth - Bristol TT shows an FGW Weymouth - London Paddington working! Seems to be a regular timetabled service rather than an Olympic special. Dep. Weymouth 0533 calling Upwey, Dorchester West, Maiden Newton, Chetnole(x), Yetminster(x), Thornford(x), Yeovil Pen Mill, Castle Cary and Westbury. A strange working, IMO, as there is no return Paddington - Weymouth trip. x = Request stop.

Would make a nice sight going through some of those places en-route but I think this is a typo by FGW!! A pity as an HST would make a nice sight going through some of those places.

Hmm, think you're right! According to this - http://www.opentraintimes.com/schedule/C21632/2012/8/8 it terminates at Bristol Parkway. There's a Paddington train 2 mins behind it, but I doubt FGW would ever advertise anything that tight as a connection, anyway, it would probably be quicker to change at Castle Cary or Bath.

Hi all,

A quick update.

Just to say that, after a few hours work, I so far have 14 extra trains relating to the Olympics of which all, bar three, are passenger workings: there is a dead working from Bristol as well. The extra trains include late-night workings as well as late evening ones.

Of these trains:

3 serve Bristol Parkway only
2 serve both Bristol TM and Bristol Parkway
8 serve Bristol TM only (including 3 dead workings)
1 is a reversing move at Cardiff but it relates to 2 other workings.

I should soon be done with compiling the list of trains but I will check a couple of them: I am busy obtaining the full WTTs for these trains and will then supply them to anyone who fancies making a playable London 2012 TT for the Bristol sim.

Found it. Said loco turn is 0315 Paddington to Cardiff Cl 67 hauled. Quite a few overnight loco stuff about, 2 on the WCML and another 2 on the ECML, some overnight trips almost like overnight bashing in the 80s!

Weymouth will be busy after the Olympics as well because the carnival has been moved back from August due to the Sailing events taking place there

This starts to get confusing! On 31st July train 1C37 was the 0030 Paddington - Exeter St. Davids but, on 28th July, train 1C37 left Paddington at 0200. I, however, am basing my train TTs on weekday workings not weekend ones in order to avoid confusion.

However, if Underwood (or anyone else) happens to have the dates that the 0315 Paddington - Cardiff ran I may try and find a way of adding it in if there is not a code clash.

Apart from the nights of the opening and closing ceremonies, 1c37 is at 0030 to Exeter and 1C38 is at 0100 to Cardiff, along with 2 extras to Oxford at 0037 and 0130. On the nights of the opening and closing ceremonies they run later at 0200 and 0230. Also don't forget the extras for football at the Millenium Stadium, there were 4 extras to London at around 2230 last night as well as a number for Bristol as well.

The 0315 doesn't appear on swlines, however, if it is run by a non passenger operator then it won't - is DB responsible for it?

Yes I have some extras from Cardiff to London but they are weekday, not weekend, ones. So far I have:

1L93 1955 Cardiff Central - London Paddington
1Z95 2045 Cardiff Central - London Paddington
1L97 2220 Cardiff Central - London Paddington
1Z97 2245 Cardiff Central - London Paddington

I heard, on BBC Radio 5, that problems with crowding at Cardiff on one night in the week just gone resulted in Arriva Trains Wales lending FGW a train. And that, IIRC, came from an ATW manager who came on air and mentioned it while he was on! If I could find out the code for that - along with its WTT - that would surely be the first ever Arriva Trains Wales working into London Paddington?!

Thanks for the tip of those 4 extras.

Dave

How did they find a spare driver who happened to sign Cardiff- Paddington and ATW traction?

That's assuming, of course, that the 'borrowed' train was used to run to Paddington. In the absence of other information, perhaps it was used to strengthen or provide an additional service to Bristol?

Here's one of interest to any enthusiasts of loco-hauled services who fancy something a bit different!

Among the extra trains I have come across is an additional Weymouth - Bristol train, code 2Z97, which leaves Weymouth at 2049 and arrives Bristol TM at 2309. The OTT website says the timings are based on the train being "Diesel-hauled (265 tonne load)" with a speed of 50mph.

The interesting part here comes about because the next working out of P3 is coded 5C90 which runs Bristol TM - Bristol Parkway - St. Philips Marsh: OTT says the timings for 5C90 are based on a 125mph HST!

It looks likely that the train is an HST: before working the 2049 Weymouth - Bristol the train works down from Westbury (Wiltshire) as 5Z97 and OTT says the timings for 5Z97 are based on a 125mph HST.

HTIOI,
Dave

You are indeed correct, there is a HST on that turn so I've read, and has happen once but is on an 'as required' basis and hasn't run much, so a percentage value would be better used in SimSig.

The 0315 might not be in the system as that too is as and when required, there seems to be no running dates but I guess there isn't any if it's a relief if needed? It has been reported as running and also reported as not running and sitting in Old Oak Common. It is a load 8 of MK1s/MK2s but weather the rakes are swapped between other loco hauled sets I don't know.

This website lists them anyway:

http://www.railtourinfo.co.uk/locohauled9.html

I also see that the GW set has ran at 02:15 to Cardiff, also ran mid-day on Saturday but has also been sent to Margam ECS (with the Derby set to form a load 16!) presumingly for something out of Cardiff? I don't know, all these different times, ECS runs ect is just confusing me to keep up with!

Right. Here goes.

I have, to my knowledge, now got all the extra Olympic trains. I have their WTTs, Routing info, arrival and departure times as ran on 01st August. Does anyone fancy the info so as to make a Bristol Olympics TT? If you do then let me know and I shall supply all the info. I have compiled summary TTs as an Excel spreadsheet if you want a look at what is involved.

In summary, there are 19 extra trains in all or which 5 are dead workings (coded either 3xxx or 5xxx). Of the passenger trains, some serve only one of the Bristol stations but some serve both:

4 only have Bristol Parkway in their WTT
3 have both Bristol TM and Bristol Parkway in their WTT
12 only have Bristol TM in their WTT.

and that includes the dead workings. I have also noted some extras for Westbury (6 in all) of which 2 feature in the Bristol extras as well. I am going to look into Southampton when I get a chance.

If anyone wants the summary TT, or the screenshots as well, give me a PM and lets get the SimSig Olympic project going!

I wouldn't mind having a look at the spreadsheet if that's ok - just to see how feasable it is to fit it around things I'm doing
