i requested a copy of the 2011 WTT direct from TFL/LU.

i found the service to be very polite and proffessional, and promptly received a nice WTT on my doorstep

I saw this earlier this year online. I also asked for a copy of the 2011 WTT, I was surprised you got a copy, as I called up and the guy said no, as it's secret information and locked away, also mention that he would not be allowed to see it either...weather TfL staff are allowed to or weather he was just saying it anyway is another matter, but it doesn't matter now of course

i requested mine via TFLs freedom of information request section on the website. just required a couple of emails. i never rung. maybe i had more success as it was through an official request channel? unless of course it was an official helpline that you rung?

Wow. Looking at a British SWTT for the first time, I find it interesting you guys use halves in timings. Though I have, of course, noticed the use of them in SS, didn't especially think metropolitan railways such as the Underground would use them. We don't have them here in Sydney or in other cities' railways from what I've noticed - just whole minutes.

Half is nothing, the Waterloo and City line goes down to a quarter of a minute.

The ¼ minute is used on the most modern lines that use ATO (Automatic Train Operation) or its modern equivalents. For many years we have used the ½ minute on all other lines. On the National Network, where trains run at much longer frequencies, a half minute here or there would not make much difference to the overall service. That said, look closer into National Rail WTTs and you will see a few ½ minute timings.

When you are trying to timetable trains that run much closer together, the extra accuracy is needed. For example, if you are to timetable trains on, say, the Piccadilly line at King's Cross, then given the capabilities of the trains, and the average time needed in the platform, without the half-minute option trains would probably have to leave every 2-3 minutes - which would in fact give a much slower timetable and thus frequency than desired. Given the smaller denomination, trains can be timed much closer together, so intervals of 1½-2 minutes can be timetabled (this is not to say they run at such frequencies, this is just an example).

The odd 15 or 30 seconds may not seem an incredible amount of time, but just imagine having a timetable with trains arriving at a platform every 90 seconds. Allow each one to spend an additional 15 seconds in that platform and see how the late-running mounts up behind in a relatively short space of time. It makes me glad I control the Metropolitan Line where things are a little slower. We still use the ½ minute, but many trains are 5 minutes apart off-peak

In Sydney trains are Timetabled by the second, but the computers can only display the minutes and the same applies to the Working Timetable. If train is timetabled depart a station at 0740 hours and 30 seconds and it departs at 0740 hours and 35 seconds it is recorded as running one minute late.

Could explain the inconsistencies in the CityRail SWTT's when you have one train running one minute between A and B and the next train running zero minutes between A and B (i.e. especially at non-stopping locations like junctions and non-stopping stations).

Aurora, can you pm me a page number in the SWTT where this occurs please?

There is a number of locations where the published time is shown as the same time in the current Working Timetable. ie. Sutherland, Ashfield, Granville and Clyde. These times apply to trains travelling at line speed.

Sydney's WTTs showed half minutes prior to computers.

I was not refering to differences between the public TT and SWTT but rather two trains operating the same way but one having a different time at one place in the WTT for an unknown reason. Example (not derived from the real TT):

Loc'n, RUN1, RUN2, RUN3
HRK: 1710, 1718, 1729
GVL Jctn: 1712, 1719, 1731
GVL: 1713, 1720, 1732
CYE: 1714, 1722, 1733
AUB: 1716, 1724, 1735

All three trains do not stop at any of the locations.

P.S. My apologies for what has turned out into a hijacking of this thread.

Nil.
