what it says on the tin, i have signalled an up train into the platform but the overlap never drops out

Did the train draw up to the signal, or was it one track short? The latter won't release the overlap*; the former will. * - There are cases where a timed occupancy of a platform track where there is more than one track in the platform will cause route locking underneath it to drop away and thus the overlap.
