58049 inside Toton TMD on 120387. The loco at this point was inside the depot having its 'Littleton Colliery' nameplates applied to the cab end prior to its naming ceremony. I have another photo which I will post in due course when I have scanned it showing the nameplates on the loco but covered up.

We used to see a Ripple Lane man at Swindon on the Anchor Butter Liner (usually an SF based 47) from Tilbury Pascal. Can't remember the headcodes now 4Vxx inbound and 4Lxx for the return empties. In the winter months the train ran every day of the week ready for the busy xmas period so if you were on the late turn on a Saturday or Sunday you would be dealing with the train in the transfer yard on your own although it didn't involve too much shunting. We used the pilot to move it once it arrived and the Ripple Lane man had gone light engine to the station and back to cross over to the upside and Cockleberry to pick up the empties and on his way.

Moonraker, I know the train well as I used to allocate the loco on that train if I was on early turn at Liverpool Street Regional Control Office. The train used to depart Tilbury around dinner time as 4V15 IIRC. The same loco worked back to Tilbury with the empties later in the evening as 4L90. I think it conveyed between 10 & 15 freightliner flats on it & was diagrammed to be worked by aa RfD Cl.47/2. I'm currently looking through my 1993 & 1994 loco diagrams to find the exact one as I know I've got it as I remember seeing some time back.

There was a headcode change at some point as I also remember it running as 4L87 more than 4L90, But thats is the loco diagram for that train for the 1994 period.

Yes that's it 4V15 and 4L90. In my day 1988/89 it ran much later and arrived in the early hours on weekdays. Usually Control would let it run early for the return trip with hardly anything about at that time of day and the RL man would be only too glad to get on his way after we put the kettle on for him to get a nice hot drink for the return trip . On weekends in the winter it ran quite early usually arriving mid evening around 20.30 - 21.30 and again Control usually let the return working run early if there was nothing about.

The railway then was a much happier place to work then than today. It did on occasions run with a Cl.37/7 from the 'FPFR' pool of locos based at Ripple Lane for the Petroleum work out of Thames Haven when the RfD Cl.47 had failed. I certainly remember sending out a Cl.37/7 on 2 separate occasions during the early 1990s. We also used to allocate the loco for 6V30 Dagenham Dock - Swansea evening speedlink service, not sure if that called at Swindon Cocklebury yard on its way west.

No 6V30 passed us by as it was the Ford Train to Bridgend if I remember rightly so nothing for us on that one. I totally agree about the railway being a much friendlier place to work then.

I remember dealing with Swindon TCS when I was at Stratford ROC during the days of Trainload Freight South East/Mainline Freight as our area went all the way down to Severn Tunnel East portal. Mike Goodfield worked there then before he went to Bristol(alot of his photos appear in the railway press). Last time I was in Swindon was in 1995 when we used to attend meetings with Railtrack over performance issues & penalty delay attributions in 125 House where the Regional Control is.

Yes Mike Goodfield came from Bristol so I imagine he went back there when Swindon B o P shut in 1999. All the Control side is in Western House (Western ICC) or Milford House now. 125 House shut about 18 months ago and is nothing to do with the railway at all now. A lot of the 125 House People have moved to the new HQ in Milton Keynes so I understand.

I had a ride out to Avonmouth BBHT from Didcot on an MGR train in 1995 with a Didcot driver who lived at Swindon. I remember the journey very well. Typically got those services it was running late, but after loading at Avonmouth we had a good run back to Didcot on 60009. The driver was Mick Tucknock IIRC. We were put inside at Wootton Bassett but had a run straight through Swindon. Thinking about it although the memory of that day is very vivid its 17 years ago now. How time flies.

They do say that when Neil Armstrong stepped down onto the moon, Ripple Lane men were waiting to relieve him.

Yes I think they were as far ranging if not more so than Saltley men Postal . I seem to recall talking to one of them before I left to go to Old Oak as a trainman (prior to becoming a driver) and he was saying that their days were numbered though due to changes elsewhere and the run down of Ford at Dagenham. Am I right in thinking that some went to the new Wembley EFOC and some went to Dollands Moor when it finally closed ?

I lost the records for this photo, except I can confirm that the Cl.56 heading along the Up & Down Slow line is 56058 heading for Bardon Hill Quarry. The location of this photo is Wigston North Junction, Leicester & the Cl.47/4 heading towards the camera is working 3C12 1452 SX NPCCS Derby - London St. Pancras during the summer of 1988.

Well both locations are only a stones throw away from each other, but as the rear of the train is still crossing over Wigston North Junction & hasn't yet reached Wigston South Junction, for me Wigston North Junction will suffice.
