Anyone know of any unsual routes services take, not quite parliamentary trains.

Today I took a service from Barking to London Fenchurch Street via Stratford which I was tipped off with.

if it qualifies, a couple of TPX and XC services use the GC line from nunnery main line to rotherham via wooburm, tinsley and ickles everyday. they also use the thrybergh chord. this is for route knowledge maintainence. equally a few EMT and XC services use the old road everyday, requiring a reversal at sheffield

FGW run the Padd - Swansea services via Gloucester when the Severn Tunnel is shut for maintenance. Usually on a Saturday and Sunday in the winter but has been known to occur at other times.

We haven't done it for a while, but in the past we've diverted the odd Southeastern main-liner via Clapham Jcn and Crystal Palace rejoining the Chatham main at Beckenham Jcn.

Is that on the overnight trips with TP? I've done a couple before at night and gone via Salford Crescent (reversal) and Man Vic to Stalybridge then usual route to Leeds.
In the other direction, there was one that went via Bolton to reach Wigan NW, using the very short freight link onto the WCML.

As for the GW network, biggest diversion I can think of is Swansea <-> Paddington via Hereford and the Cotswold's, shame I missed out on those diversions!

Best ones I did was during the Reading closure. Mike Miles and I went up to London on a FGW HST from Westbury to Waterloo via Salibury, then back from Paddington via Greenford and Banbury (reverse), through Didcot West Curve, and back to Swindon. Two little-used passenger sections in one day, and HSTs on the Chilterns and on the south west main line. Great day that I doubt will be repeated soon.

Yes I wish I'd gone on those diversions last year when it was all going on at Reading. The new station is rapidly taking shape now I see

The most planned diversions on one journey I ever did (which I really enjoyed) was in the 80s on the Sundays 0830 Glasgow Queen Street to King's Cross HST.

We went normal route via Falkirk High to Edinburgh, then things got interesting! We went to Newcastle via Carstairs, Carlisle and Hexham. Then after Donny we went via Gainsborough, Lincoln and Spalding (including the southbound Sleaford avoider, of course). Then as a finale via the Hertford Loop.

An epic trip!

There used to be a weekly service from Stockport to Staylbridge via Reddish North worked by Cl.101 DMU. Last time I took that route was when I went train spotting at Guide Bridge in 1980 prior to the Woodhead line closing & that service ran hourly from Stockport out of the north end bay platform.

Still runs as an FO 10:13 Stockport - Stalybridge Parly (no service in the other direction). Probably a Cl. 142 these days.

I believe that 1 or 2 of the London Overground services per day are running from Highbury and Islington - Battersea Park instead of Clapham Junction in order to retain route knowledge.

I understand these are parliamentary trains to avoid closing some of the curves and junctions between Wandsworth Road and Battersea Park now that Southern’s South London Line services have had to be withdrawn (Southeastern services do not call at Battersea Park – they use an alternative route between Wandsworth Road (where they do not stop) and Victoria).

The Virgin 'blockbusters' (as they were dubbed on Usenet because they somehow managed to get Voyagers from Birmingham to Euston despite a total WCML blockade!) have run quite a few times now when the south WCML is shut. I'm told they're running this Christmas, although I haven't checked that myself yet. They run from Nuneaton to Coventry, down the Chiltern route and then a long slow tour of various curves and branch lines in west London before rejoining the WCML just outside Euston.

I travelled on one a couple of years ago during bank holiday engineering works - very very crowded (possibly because I was on the only direct train from the north that day, they normally run as a shuttle) and I ended up sitting in a vestibule. I happened to have a Baker atlas with me by accident, so I spent most of the journey peering through the window and following where we were, until the guard noticed me, came over to chat for a bit about the unusual route and then told me I could go and sit in first class for the last half an hour into Euston :)

There are some timings for the service in 2008 on uk.railway, they're probably out of date now but it gives you an idea of the route.

It is new route knowledge for the LOROL drivers. I think Southern are running very few empties this way to retain their route knowledge. And yes, it's the standard "cheaper to run a few services than to close the line to passenger services"; this being the Up & Down Atlantic lines from Factory Junction to Battersea Park.

I did hear a rumour that the a few SouthEastern services may have begun stopping at Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street to get some service to Victoria. Need to confirm this though. Probably peak flow only.

And regarding the LOROL East London Line services:
One in the morning: Empties to Battersea Park, Passenger service from BP to the ELL. (06:20 ish depart BP)
One in the evening: Passenger service from the ELL to BP and Empties back. (23:00 ish arrive BP)

There was one that got away on 16/04/2007 which I would love to have seen happen. There was a bridge bash at Cramlington in the afternoon leading to chaos at the north end of the ECML. I got on the 16:00 Glasgow Central - Kings Cross at Alnmouth about 10 down and we were warned to expect further delays. At Morpeth (unscheduled stop) the Newcastle Thunderbird was sitting off the station waiting to back on and drag us round the Blyth and Tyne loop, rejoining the ECML at Benton just north of Newcastle. As the Thunderbird was backing on, word came through that the Engineer had given the bridge at Cramlington a clean bill of health which kiboshed the plan. We eventually got to KX 2 hours late (TCF at Tollerton and slow line from Sandy to Hitchin included) but I would have accepted being even later if I had got my ride round the Blyth and Tyne.

I knew of that, also Southern are still running the 10:02 Kensington Olympia to Wandsworth Road and the 16:10 Clapham High Street to Kensington Olympia, empties both start and end at Streatham Hill carriage sheds, I presume the route will be via Brixton, Herne Hill and Tulse Hill. Be useful as over Christmas some Southern services from the Sussex Coast to London Victoria are diverted over that route as East Croydon to Clapham Junction is closed.

I was slightly annoyed during the recent floods when FGW were running the Paddington-Swansea services via Bath and using the Rhubarb Loop to avoid reversing at Temple Meads. If they hadn't been running nonstop they'd have been ideal for my commute - and as the Rhubarb Loop has such a tight speed restriction, a down one would entirely block the east end of Temple Meads for about ten minutes.

The best unusual diversion route I've managed was when Darlington was closed some time in the late 90s - York to Durham via Yarm, rejoining the ECML at Ferryhill. I've also done the south side of the loop at Newcastle, to correct a reversed formation.

if it counts i was coming back from st pancras to sheffield on the last train out of pancras circa 22:00 a couple of years ago, during which, due to engineering works, we ran via trent south junction - Trent DGL for reversal, then out again on the GPL towards spondon.

another was departing from P6 northbound from sheffield station last new years day, a true rarity

Forest Pines - I've done that curve a few times on engineering work days, I think it was used the weekend just gone, or it's used this weekend coming, I forget now but it's one of them. If you want to travel over it, there is one passenger train every Monday to Friday that does the curve if that's any use?

Geoff - I missed those! They are repeating this coming Easter in 2013 if your interested. Routes will be:

- HST's diverted via Banbury again and down the Chilterns
- The Salisbury route will repeat but this time they will now go via Wimbledon rather than the Richmond/Windsor route. There is talk of using Platforms 20/21 too but I don't know if this will happen
- A Theale to Westbury service will be in use using Class 165/166 Turbo's (I'll be at Westbury to see this for sure!)
- 3 car Class 150001 and 150002 (ex-prototypes) will run on a Didcot to Cheltenham service vice HST, first time for a 150 to do passenger work East of Swindon?

That has reminded me to try and book the dates off at work as I would like to do all the above in one Weekend.

FGW are suppose to sign the routes this time rather than use Freightliner Pilots

James.

Not sure whether this counts or not, but it's very unusual to be able to catch a train to Hertford North on a Sunday. However, on odd occasion this is possible, when the usual rail replacement bus service is itself replaced by a train!
