Hi - I am new to this but have been enjoying the challenge.

Maybe I have missed something but in the Brighton Sim with TT September 2009 v1.03 I cannot see how 5H51 (0500 Lovers Walk - Littlehampton) is supposed to be routed through Preston Park when it enters from Lovers Walk L2 at 5:00 am.

I can get the simulation to run OK if I don't follow the booked platforms but would like to understand (1) why the timetable calls for 2A10 (0402 Victoria - Brighton) to cross the up line into platform 1 and then cross back again; and (2) how to route 5H51 to allow this.

The GIF Brighton 5H51 shows the screen with 5H51 on the Carriage Road at ground signal T1242. The simplifier shows that it is booked to be on a Preston Park platform from 5:10 to 5:18. During this time 2A10 is booked to pass platform 1 at 5:11 and 2T00 (0509 Brighton - Bedford) is booked to stop in platform 2 from 5:12 1/2 to 5:13. The only platform left for 5H51 is number 3.

There is no problem routing 5H51 out of platform 3 to Hove through the Cliftonville tunnel. However the problem is that I can't set a route from T1242 up the the LOS at the far end of platform 3. It is physically possible and the points can be set manually (see GIF) but clicking T1242 and LOS1 has no effect at all - no report that there is not a route just nothing except the flashing cursor by T1242 goes out. The same thing happens if you try going from T430 to platform 3.

Since I want to understand the logic behind the signalling, and this is also a beta version, I probed a bit further trying to see what could be done and what couldn't.

The route can be set through platform 1 and then across to the down main behind the LOS but this has two snags. First, it required the whole down main to be clear right back to Keymer Junction and 2A10 will already be approaching along that section. Second, when 5H51 gets to platform 1 it stops and the driver changes ends.

Running up into Preston Park I can route from Up Main (T430), carriage road (T1242) or the Cliftonville spur (T426) into platform 1 or 2 but not 3. Starting down out of any platform (1, 2 or 3) I can route to Down Main, the carriage road or the Cliftonville spur.

Since it was available I took a look at the "lie of the land" on the Route Learner training video published by Track Access Services Ltd (A001003 Brighton to Blackfriars - http://www.railnetchannel.tv/avc-view.aspx?videoid=125&categoryid=4). Approaching T430 signal T1242 is clearly visible behind it (See GIF). T430 has only one feather and cannot show a proceed aspect into platform 3 (as in the simulation).

The training video for the reverse route gives a view of T425, 7 and 9 (the platform down starters - see GIF). I note that for platforms 1 and 2 each signal has two feathers giving it three routes able to show a proceed aspect (again as in the simulation). However, T425 (the platform 3 starter) has only one feather. This suggests that the ability to route from platform 3 (T425) all three ways might be a mistake - although there is a shunting signal under the main signal head.

Comming back to the SimSig timetable, with these three trains all crossing in front of each other there are interesting possibilities if anyone is late! I wonder why the apparently simpler option of reversing 5H51 in platform 1 and running 2T00 and 2A10 through 2 and 3 respectively was not adopted.

The platforming confliction at Preston Park is most likely a timetable error; either on the part of the writer or perhaps in the working timetable itself. 2A10 would logically use platform 3 and 5H51 would reverse in platform 1.

In the real world 2A10 would and does use platform 3 (unless it's booked to use the bi-di (note to oneself to check our simplifiers)), also there is no route from T1242 to the LOS in platform 3 at Preston Park. It would come in handy at certain times of the day if we had it.

I cannot find a problem with 5H51. It appears at Lovers Walk Depot L2 and heads on the Carriage Road in the UP direction to Preston Park. Are you getting mixed up with L21?

Barry its not to do with the depot exits; as Darren said there is no route able to be set from T1242 to LOS in P3 Preston Park hence the original query by TonyE

(goes to check which platform I have it stopping at in my 2012 TT)

Hi Folks

Thanks for the replies. Glad I had missed anything very subtle in there.

Had another interesting one just now. Running Brighton with only minor problems (because I am not very good at it!) I got a delay assisting a passenger as follows:

This concerns 5D05 (Seed to P7 (377{3}+377)).
At 4:09 my message boad shows:

04:02 5D05 has entered the area (Lovers Walk L21 Signal)
...
04:08 5D05 has finished dividing
04:09 Train 1D05: Ok, 1D05 delayed
04:09 5T99 has finished dividing

Issue: 1D05 is the "back half" after 5D05 divides into:
5F32 0421 Brighton - Seaford (377{3}) via Wivelsfield
1D05 0530 Brighton - Eastbourne (377)

The passenger needing assistance delay has been raise on the unit that will be left in the platform after the front three have departed to Seaford. Not a big problem but unrealistic for two reasons:

1A) I would expect the rear train to be left dark with the doors closed while passengers board the front units. If anything were to happen I would expect it to affect the first train out.

1B) In this case the front train is booked to run empty (code 5...) so it shouldn't be affected by passenger assistance delays. [Perhaps this is what caused the sim to apply the delay to the rear unit.]

2) The 1D05 driver is also apparently psychic! At 4:09 he knows that 80 minutes later his train will be delayed by 5 minutes giving assistance to a passenger. An engineering fault would be more credible this far ahead of departure.

The delays are essentially random, and can affect any train at any loaction for any reason. 95% of the time they are plausible, but every now and then you get one like that. See here and here for some more random delays.

Gareth, the TT for 5H51 does not show the train going to P3 at Preston Park. It is going to P3 at Hove.

Having looked at the simplifiers at work for panel 6 in the current timetable it shows both 5H82 and 2A10 booked to use platform 1 at Preston Park at the same time! But everyone at work signals 2A10 through platform 3 at Preston Park (including me last week on nights).

Apologies Barry, I'd seen P3 at Preston Park mentioned in the post and having not looked at the 2009 TT for a while wasn't sure if 5H51 had been platformed that way henceforth my original comment

Call it brain freeze from withdrawl symptoms for lack of VB since its been stopped exported to the UK!

Thanks that's most re-assuring! On my first attempt at using Brighton with absolutely no experience in a signal box since I used to sneak into Catford Bridge as a boy in short trousers I put 5H51 into platform 1 and then had to run 2A10 through platform 3. It was only when I was trying to work out where I had picked up a wrong platform penalty I found the problem.
