Hello all, I'm Vontrapp, I have played 1 multiplayer game and I shall play more. I do have my niggles though, for track-circuit failures over p&c: there should be manual control of points in these cases.

As so often on these sims, I'm afraid you have exactly what the signalman in the actual box has. On a panel or VDU of any description, there is no way of operating points from the signalbox when they're locked by track circuit failure; the only way it can be done is by cranking manually from the ground. In an old fashioned box with manual levers it was different. A sealed release (a small glass window with a button behind) was provided; if you had a track failure you broke the glass and released the lock for yourself. (But beware - you were responsible for ensuring there was no train on that track circuit and you would most definitely be on a Form 1 if you moved the points under a train while a sealed release was open!) I think the reason that facility was never extended to panels is that the points are rarely visible from the signalbox and therefore the signalman cannot satisfy himself by direct observation that they're clear. Relying on your memory of where trains are under those circumstances is pretty dangerous (to say the least) - and I say that from experience of working both frames and panels. Sorry, just realised that sounds a bit offputting and I don't want to do that. Welcome to the Simsig madhouse - even I don't bite and we're mainly quite a friendly lot. Just that I'm a grumpy old dinosaur who grew up in proper signalboxes. <ducks> (I'll get my coat on the way out ) Last edited: 05/03/2013 at 10:38 by kbarber Log in to reply |

I'm a grumpy young dinosaur that only works proper signalboxes (although we have paper instead of glass as our seals), but nothing wrong with proper lever pulling boxes! Welcome to SimSig too! I'm sure I've seen on some of the newer sims an option to hand work the points, can't remember where or which Sim, though. Also couldn't tell you how to work out which set of points was which, unless it's on the Wiki. Happy Simming! Log in to reply |
