Hi all,

I've had a look around and can't see if anyone has raised this. I'm not sure if it's intentional or a bug, just curious:

While running the light engine around a train stopped in the goods road at Didcot (into or out of the power station, doesn't matter), I've found that the light engine will sometimes take shunt signal 6420 and proceed back towards his train, but other times it will sit at 6420 (same route set and 6420 showing proceed) and call me asking for authorisation to move.

It seems that, while doing this move, if I set 933 to 951 and then back onto the train, the light engine will stop behind 6420 and go as soon as he has the road.

However, if I've got a little bit ahead of myself and have something standing at 940, I can set from 933 into the power station and the light engine will take it and stop behind 6420 as intended, but will then request authorisation to move once he has the road back onto his train.

Does that make sense? It's not a hassle, but I'm wondering if it's meant to happen. I'm from Australia, I don't know your rules

I think it might be a simulation bug (possibly because the track into the PS is normally used in one direction only?), in real life if the driver had stopped directly behind the signal he wouldn't phone in asking for authority to proceed.

Yeah, I didn't think they'd need to ask (what with it being a fully signalled movement the whole way), but didn't want to run in hollering "AAGH BUG BUG THERE'S A BUG!" just in case you guys over there have some obscure rule relating to the running direction of the track I'd routed him to or that it's a yard or... or something :)

I'm aware the reversing moves out of Didcot TC require authorisation to proceed because the engine has detached and is nowhere near a signal, so that's all cool.

Are you playing Swindon or Swindid? Swindon A & B is very outdated. I have been hosting Swindid today and there have been no problems with the way the loco is shunted provided you abide by the timetable. The signal numbers you mention do not conform with Swindid.

'Swindon A&B' and 'SwinDid' are the same sim, the scrolly combined version of the old Swindon A and Swindon B Didcot, which are both deprecated.

The signal numbers in the OP match SwinDid as follows:

  • 6420 is the shunting signal on the Up Relief at Foxhall Junction

  • 933 is the down direction signal on the Up Relief at Foxhall Junction

  • 951 is the down direction signal on the Up Relief at Milton Junction

  • 940 is the up direction signal on the Up Relief at Milton Sidings

Without having tested to see it myself, I'd be inclined to agree with Steamer - drivers generally phone for authority to proceed when the front of their train isn't at or approaching a signal, which would suggest the loco has stopped with its east end cab in advance of the signal for some reason.

Steve, Sorry I have misread your question. You cannot shunt the LE using the lines into the Power Station. It needs authorisation. If you are unable to set the route to 951, you can set the route into Milton Sidings. The engine will reverse at sig 6420 and move back to its train.

Ah, brilliant! I forget those sidings even exist sometimes, none of the timetables I play use them at all. I am on SwinDid by the way, it's easily my favourite sim.
