Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew from official sources or from observations, what the length or the capacity of the Salisbury spur is at Westbury? I ask, as I am currently putting together a Westbury 09/10 timetable, and 7C76 1440 Acton-Whatley is booked Westbury DR 17/03 & then Westbury Dn T.C. 1705-1742 to collect wagons for Whatley Quarry. I wanted use the Spur vice the West reversal between Westbury & Warminster to keep the main running lines free of conflicting moves. Thanks in advance. When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A Log in to reply |

In SimSig it is 400 meters, so it should handle most trains. I believe only the 'jumbo' stone train is to long, this is 7A09, Merehead - Acton TC

SimSig has been set at 400m but I now see that is wrong (since Google Earth now shows Westbury in more detail, which it didn't originally!). In reality it's just under 200m long but it looks overgrown so I don't know how much is actually usable. However, I've always seen them use the Down Salisbury for shunting or reversing. You can walk alongside on a pedestrian footbridge next to the Salisbury lines over the Avoiding Lines and with the cant in the track and the fact the footbridge is several feet lower than rail height, those wagons really look as if they'll topple over on to you!

Many thanks for the replies chaps, spoke to a colleague in Reading Panel who confirms your observation Geoff regarding the use of the main line to shunt to/from the Down Yard. Will have to factor that in when entering the schedules, particularly as only 2 mins are given in the WTT to pass the station, shunt & get into the yard, clear of the running lines!
