On the principle that lessons are always better learnt if you have to dig for the answers yourself, a search of the Forum and the Wiki are probably the best starting point for any queries.

Apart from the link Peter gives, there is also a thread on the forum at http://www.SimSig.co.uk/index.php?option=com_agora&task=topic&id=117&Itemid=54 which goes over much of the same ground.

All of us have come to SimSig as newbies which means that most of the questions a newbie asks have been covered at some stage in the past. Currently both the Wiki and the Forum are good resources when you have a question; if we ever get the old forum carried over to the new site that will add a wealth of additional material.

Technically speaking, you don't need to host a network. You just need to allow whatever sim you are running to communicate with other PC's via the internet. Under normal circumstances, your hardware and software security systems "hide" your PC from the internet to prevent people accessing your personal files, stealing personal information and generally causing mayhem. However, this same said security also blocks the SimSig traffic as well.

Simply disabling this security isn't an option so what you need to do is create a "hole" through your security specifically to allow for the SimSig data to get to your PC whilst blocking everything else.

It's impossible to give specific instructions how to do this as everyone's setup is different due to the myriad of networking hardware and security software available. However, it generally means setting up port forwarding to allow traffic to pass through your router and setting up rules to allow traffic though your firewall.

Details on how to do this can be found in the manual for your router and/or firewall. However, if your are unsure, then feel free to send me a Personal Message and I'll talk you through it off the forum.

Further to everything that has been written earlier in the thread, I have just remembered that there was a very useful link in the old Forum. I can't remember who made the original posting so apologies for not giving credit where it is due, but the posting pointed to http://portforward.com/ .

The aim of this site is to include port forwarding instructions for all routers available - the site certainly includes a comprehensive listing of makes and models. You can either purchase a bit of software through the site that will automatically set up your router to forward as required or you can work your way through to the support page for your own router and follow the detailed instructions to set your router up manually. There is a long list of games etc. with pre-defined ports on the site; SimSig is not listed but there are also instructions to set up the forwarding for unlisted applications.

I should add that I have no connection with portforward.com and that any use you make of the software or information on the site is at your own risk. However, I would recommend it as a very useful resource.
