I had a little try last night and I really enjoyed it only played about 1 of simtime I was wondering as the sim goes on can you short trip trains more easy than you do in real life on the vic line for example turning brixton trains at Victoria to make up and time and on the N/B doing the same thing at Seven Sisters as both these moves are real life practise when I was on attachment at Coburg St and is the Victoria still controlled from this location and are the signallers still in control of the train radio. Thanks Peter no I havent had the chance to read the manual as of yet send me the link would be great and yes I forgot about Kings X but this isnt done during peak hours unless theres a service suspension and I believe that the cross over at Warren Street is hardly ever used these days. Using my real-life controller experience, during testing, I can assure you every crossover, short-trip and siding was used in some of the things I set myself up for! You can also "reform/re-number" the service - provided you keep track of what you're doing. To "keep it realsitic" try not to short trip the first train through after a delay. Do the 2nd or 3rd one in the queue. It's only when things go wrong. If everything is running fine, the timetable provides the service that everyone wants so not much intervention is required. On lines like the Victoria, when everything is running smooth it is down to the operator(s) to monitor "headways" (the time between trains) to ensure they are all balanced. An uneven gap in trains - even just half a minute - can mean an extended wait for customers, and also places an extra burden on the train following the gap (in that 30 seconds, 100 more people could have arrived on the busiest platforms). This is turn causes that train to run later and later and the gap to widen even further. When things do go wrong, the service may be put back together by using various methods. The main ones are Short-tripping and Reforming/renumbering - but only if you have the driver of the newly reformed service available. Quite often the controller(s) will use a mixture of the 2. As a non-professional I don't fully understand exactly what Short-tripping and Re-forming/re-numbering involves, though their names indicate their general purpose. If these are methods that can be applied to SimSig, would you please explain to the rest of us how to go about it? Things frequently "go wrong" in my sims and I am always looking for the best way to quickly restore smooth operation. Are you referring to actions such as F2 > Timetable options > "Go non-stop through next station"? With the welfare of passengers in the train and on the next station being my chief concern, I am most reluctant to do this. Our Metro Trains Melbourne is notorious for doing this when things get tight. Off-topic but related, Metro has also been caught out scheduling "ghost trains". Log in to reply |

Short-tripping: Ending a late-running train journey before the booked destination, then forming the next booked trip of that train in the opposite direction. For example, V201-1 arrives Victoria 20 late. It is terminated, reversed via the siding and forms V201-2 and awaits the booked departure time (in the siding). Getting Simsig to do this is sometimes fiddly, but is achieved by editing / getting the train to run to a different path etc. Reforming: Train V201-2 arrives Seven Sisters northbound 20 late. Instead of arrivng at 12:00 it arrives at 12:20. The driver who is waiting to drive V205-2 is standing there and his train is back at Brixton. Give him the V201 stock and get him to reform it to V205 thus turning a 20 late train to a right time train. You cannot do this with every single train, and you also have to plan ahead and think what you're going to do with the late trains whos drivers you have alredy used. In Simsig, again this is achieved by using the "run to a different path" method" and sometimes you will end up with more than 1 train with the same number. You need to keep track. Obviously you won't be aware of which trains have new drivers - you may need to use a bit of imagination, or pretend you have a never ending supply of them!
