Ah yes I remember the event,

He quickly diverted it onto a bridge, where it crashed but caused no other damage.

The by-pass lines were never reinstated.

Ahh have always wondered what the incident was that closed the goods lines around the back of Citadel station and this would appear to be it, if those are what you call the by-pass lines Peter

Brake test not done properly (at Basford Hall IIRC); driver complained of dragging brakes at Preston(?) and the tapper pulled the strings all down the train, after which he experienced no more problems (well, of that sort anyway).
