Hello,

I have noticed that frieght trains passing through Challow on Swindom A+B tend to stop either at the end of the loop or even on the main line despite having a green aspect shown to them, before immediately setting off again. I've noticed this on the down main line in particular, especially with frieght trains classed '6' and upwards. Some of them have waiting times built into the schedule it seems to allow for holding back while the passenger services run through, but even if they are running late - beyond their expected leaving time - they still stop briefly which can be disruptive when your trying to push a gap between passenger services with no precious minutes to spare. The fact that they stop, even on the main line (instead of the loop) with a green aspect seems a bit odd to me, which I do every now and then to save them some time if there is a large gap.

I don't know whether this is a feature or a bug, perhaps someone can confirm this for me and also see if it happens on the 'Up' lines. If it is a bug, can it be fixed quickly for the 'refresh' version?

I guess it is because the trains have a TT'd stop built in - it is not a bug when a train stops at a scheduled stopping place, it is how it is designed.

If you've got one running late and want to keep it moving or you've got one running early enough to get to the next passing place without delaying anything behind it, you need to intervene and edit the TT. Apologies if you already know how to do this, but it may help someone else who has not gone through the procedure before.

Before the train gets to the loop go to the F2 screen and right click on the train description. You will get a pop-up menu including Timetable Options. Click on that and then Edit Timetable. If you then click on the Location List tab, you then get the full TT for the train. Click on the next line of the TT past the Challow stopping times and then at the top of the screen click to set the current/next location. The train will then keep going until it reaches that location without hesitation, repetition or deviation and you've solved your problem.

You can also use the same trick if you have a late running stopping passenger and want to run it part or full way non-stop in order to pick up the next working nearer time.

Hi JG,

Thanks for your descriptive reply, it was very helpful. I'm not all that familiar with editing the timetable functions so it was a big help. I thought being a frieght train it would carry on down its scheduled route if given the greens to run early. Obviously if you did want to hold it back then you would keep it at a red. As you say, must be the way the timetable was written and the way the simulation interprets it.

To add a little more, a timetable writer may want the train to stop at a particular place, for example to change drivers. For that he needs to write the destination time in as a stop (ie not ticking the "passing time" box). Presumably the timetable in this case has that stop programmed in so the simulation does as it's told. You can either edit just that train's current run via the F2 option above, or make your changes permanent by using the F4 timetable editor and saving the timetable. Which timetable is this?

Finally, you could also use the F2 option to run non-stop through the next station.

Thanks for your reply. It appears to happen on both the timetables I have, 'Swindon Summer 2005' and 'Swindon IECC Winter 2006-7 v2.3'.

I've noticed it only appears to happen when they have both an Arr and Dep time scheduled in the timetable. It could well be to change drivers, but I believe it is happening at other locations as well which have an Arr and Dep time, such as Didcot station itself, then followed by another stop at Challow and nearly everywhere else they have some 'slack' time scheduled in the timetables. I was under the impression that the difference in Arr and Dep times were to allow other (faster) services through such as passenger trains, but in the absence of them, to carry on running through if it can be done without causing delay to anything else.

It's not a big problem really, I was just enquiring as to whether this was normal behaviour or not as I wasn't sure, so I thought I would mention it. It can be a pain on the odd occasion though when pushing for the gap inbetween other services. At least we are aware it's there now, so people can plan for an additional few minutes should they decide to run a frieght straight through, or use the timetable editing functions as suggested by yourself and JG.
