Ground frames - which ones go in the sim? 17/06/2014 at 01:27 #61746 | |

Inspired by the large number of ground frames left out of Carlisle but accidentally retaining the (hidden) lock/unlock controls, I was wondering - what decides whether or not a particular ground frame goes into the sim? Is it just the case that all ground frames that actually exist and aren't padlocked out of use go in, or are there more criteria (like they have to be in use by regularly-scheduled trains)? If the latter, surely including all the ground frames would be a good idea so that ones that do exist can be used (eg for things like turnback) in cases of failure?

It's entirely up to the sim author to decide whether it's worth the effort of adding a frame or not. While the general policy is "as accurate as possible", in practice there are trade-offs in terms of effort required for benefit gained, available data, and so on.

Are there any GFs that don't appear in any time period on Carlisle? I thought the hidden controls were "era handling", but I could be wrong.

There's a full list of ground frames, and the eras they're visible in, here. The ones missing ones tend to be remote crossovers on the main lines that would only be used during possessions etc.

According to my (recent) Quail map at least, most of those exist and are not padlocked. Thanks, clive - I wouldn't have thought it'd be too onerous a task to add a relatively simple groundframe to a sim (eg one controlling a single crossover) but I don't have access to the source code so I wouldn't know for sure - doubtless in any case you'd have to do more testing, etc., so there is that. I hadn't considered the lack of documentation issue as well - good points. Log in to reply The following user said thank you: Forest Pines |

Putting the Emergency GF Xovers into the simulation is relatively easy, but making sensible use of the facility in SimSigland is more problematical: 1) will need extra locations and paths adding, to allow... 2) TT editing to make use of the crossovers; 3) other than overnight usage, will probably come to gridlock sooner or later, so would probably need an emergency TT to boot. (Try the pilotmen scenario on Cambridge, ideally needs a special TT, which is what would be used IRL.) Or you faff around editing trains on the hoof, maybe workable in a hosted game. Becomes a question of whether it adds any real value to the simulation really. Non-emergency GFs achieve better value for money. I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either. Last edited: 17/06/2014 at 16:30 by AndyG Reason: typo Log in to reply |

Some of the EGFs where originally intended to be visible in both eras but all the Single Line Working stuff wasn't viable at the time. Log in to reply |
