This white button is situated below Dore South Jn - quite simply, when can it be used (I've never managed to get it to be clickable) and what does it do?

From the WIKI:

Quote:
The overlap on signal 48 does not release. In emergencies, it may be necessary to set a route from signal 49 whilst a train is stopped at 48. In these cases, operating the junction protection release will cause signal 48's overlap to drop, provided the berth track circuit has been occupied for at least 2 minutes. This should not be used for normal operations, and a penalty is incurred if it is.

Ah, there's 2 different pages for each sim on the wiki, which is mildly confusing... No wonder I couldn't find it.

signal 48 is very close to the mainline which is why there are safety issues there. if possible you should hold a train on the manchester line until it can get a clear route round the curve.
hope thats helpful

I recall being told to only use it when absolutely necessary as it can affect your score.
When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A

I've just been playing with "49 Junction Protection Release" and it was a hefty 100 point penalty which appears under "Other points lost". Ouch!
