Routing Class 1 trains via the Up Goods... 12/10/2014 at 15:55 #64999 | |

Bit of a basic question, I'm sure... But here goes. I recently completed my second run through of Carlisle 79-80 with scale of problems set to None... I feel like I've got to grips with the timetable now and fancied a challenge - I've started the timetable with scale of problems at medium (must be mad). In the first 5 minutes, I had a TC failure on the Goods Lines which have locked up the main lines (pic attached). Seems like my only option to keep the numerous up passenger trains moving is routing them via Carlisle Yard and then talking them past the signal. Obviously this will incur big penalties. As a passenger train (albeit Motorail), are there any special rules for sending 1V54 down the Goods Lines? I figured that it'd need a straight run with no other trains nearby due to there being no overlaps on the signals. Or am I treading on the toes of the rules and this would be straight up forbidden, even at the risk of trains being delayed? Cheers! Post has attachments. Log in to view them. Log in to reply |

This might not exactly answer your question (and I would like to know the answer too), but since Carlisle has handcranking of points, you could run trains normally on the main just by handcranking the points to normal and talking trains past red.

I didn't know I could do that until I've just looked. Cheers!

(Not sure if this was a bug introduced into the core code after Carlisle, though) Log in to reply |

For a track circuit failure I believe it works OK.This might not exactly answer your question (and I would like to know the answer too), but since Carlisle has handcranking of points, you could run trains normally on the main just by handcranking the points to normal and talking trains past red.Although isn't the handcranking feature somewhat broken, with trains refusing to believe that handcranked points are set properly? But yeah, I'd also like to know the procedure for sending passenger trains on goods lines if there is no other option to keep traffic moving. Is it entirely forbidden or is it allowed if certain precautions are taken? Last edited: 12/10/2014 at 16:52 by Muzer Log in to reply |

Carlisle does have hand cranking, it was a pre-loader feature.

Thanks DSeaWall. Proving the route throughout seems like a fair compromise. I can confirm Carlisle definitely does have hand cranking as I've just used it. A diverted ECML Class 1 is actually booked around the goods lines and avoids the station altogether before rejoining at Caldew - there's no special notes on how to handle this. Fascinating to learn about these things. I've played SimSig for quite a while but rarely with failures as it hurts my poor head! Log in to reply |

I left out the 'passenger train on goods lines' penalty when it became apparent that there was a scheduled move in the 1979 timetable, although I don't know if owing to the situation with Penmanshiel tunnel at the time the rule was a permanent one or a temporary relaxation or worked by special instruction. I also don't have a copy of the box instructions when the goods lines where still open and haven't run into any signalmen who worked the panel at the time - even the youngest will be at or approaching retirement age by now, so lacking any definate 'gen' I decided not to bother having a penalty there. There is certainly provision in the signalling regs for running passenger trains over goods lines. As Danny says, securing facing points without an FPL is a must (two of my boxes - Langham and Oakham - have such points at the outlet from their respective goods lines), as is ensuring that any vehicles in sidings are secured (usually no trap points between sidings and goods lines) and that the line is clear and the route set for two whole signal sections, in summary.
