I believe the support columns under the old platform 1 at Clapham Junction are quite badly corroded and will be expensive to put right. Instead, I think the intention is to split Platform 2 in two with a Cambridge-style arrangement.

There's an unused centre road there, so i'd wondered whether they would widen the footbridge end of the platform out to give two tracks & two platforms.

But they would need the centre road between platforms 2 & 3 to create a Cambridge-like arrangement on patform 2. I also don't think they have the space to widen, especially as the only space they could use to widen is in Platform 1. And if Ian's comments are correct, then that isn't likely to happen! I think you're misunderstanding me :) 1. Shorten the existing track serving the existing platform, trains only call at the outer end. 2. Widen the existing platform across the old trackbed so it serves the centre road. You now have two platforms suitable for 4 car LOROL trains there where the existing platform is, and no need for the expensive points/signals/complexity of a centre-crossover arrangement. The existing platform should be extendable at the Wandsworth end if it needs a little more space to make it work. Simples! Log in to reply |

The centre route is not unused. I have previously see a Class 47 locomotive (47245 to be exact) sitting there on a Saturday. If I remember correctly there was a charter running out of Waterloo on the day so they clearly wanted to store the loco there for the later ECS move. It may be the case that Network Rail do not want to lose the middle road due to this.

Looking at my old Quail there's a few old sidings served by the middle road there are known as "Kensington sidings", Clapham Yard is the bit in the middle. Yes that track does provide the only access to Kensington Sidings, but they've been out of regular use for years - they were empty when I was a kid going to school through there back in the late 80s! ;) IIRC there were crane/footbridge bits in there recently to do with the accessibility improvements, but that's a temporary thing? Ref loco's, you can put them into Clapham Yard as well. Log in to reply |

I just saw 2 test trains running over the bridge near Haggerston Station so am I right in thinking that the signalling has been commisioned so non-passenger trains can now run over these tracks I am also aware that drivers are route learning down the Southern end.

Hi Tony, I was out this week doing roads on afternoons-lates so might well have got a lift with you already but my cab pass isnt valid beyond saturday so got to go up and down on our ones now, I'm sure I was on with a Horsham bloke a day or so ago so might well have been you mate. I was talking to a signaller from Three Bridges at the P'boro meet and he said it was there but not in use. The lack of use caused havoc when they tried the test ELL timetable a few weeks ago. They stopped the attempt after only a couple of hours!

Hi Vitesse Did have one of your guys with me the other week. This de-icing equipment thingy - do you have a switch in the cab then to turn it off and on ? What does it do? We don't have anything like that in the 377's - just an ice-mode selection. We had a brief issued at Horsham yesterday about the commisioning of the West Croydon turnback - though not sure what the date was !! ( you can see I pay strict attention to these damn things lol!) I must have been quite lucky with London Bridge box lately - not had a wrong route for nearly a year! I'll let you know if i manage to be the first to get a 377 or a 455 up onto the flyover !!! I passed one of your 378's at Forest Gate yesterday - it still looked far too shiny and new - you need to dirty them up a bit ! Tony Log in to reply |
