One thing that always catches me out is illustrated in the screenshot below.

On the down fast there's a series of signals on the left hand side of the track (from the train's perspective). Then there's signal W525 which is on the right hand side at P3 Barnes.

So when scanning the route, I often miss these right hand side signals. Maybe a better design would be to have them consistently on the left. NWC also has something similar and always catches me out.

What is the logic for placement - is it to match the real life layout?

Yep, this matches the real world layout, the signal is (I think) on the end of the platform.

All part of learning the panel / route!

Quite often wrong side signals will be flagged as a risk due to drivers also expecting signals on the left side.

Yes - see a picture here.

Wimbledon main panel (1-4) shows signals on the left regardless of which side they are by the track: this is slightly unusual.
