I understand that this weekend sees the abolition of Berwick, Polegate, Hampden Park, Eastbourne and Pevensey & Westham boxes with control passing to Three Bridges on Monday morning.

Any panel pics floating around?

I know the Arun Valley, which should have happened last month, was put back. I was under the impression that these closures were also put back. Perhaps I got confused.

The Arun Valley is to be 15 to 17 March 2014 TBC and the Coastway East is now supposed to be 12 to 14 April 2014. I've seen the new Coastway East workstation in the ROC but as of yet I belaive it hasn't been signed off, so can't be used.

I can confirm that the East Coast is now looking to be done over the weekend 12-14 April as 'hooverman' says.

I suppose the annoying thing (as with the Arun Valley) is that subsequent weekend alterations had originally been planned using the new headway values and signalling. On the positive side, at least they have a new time frame to complete the work and we know it will be completed eventually!

Well at least it gives a chance (as regards to the Arun Valley) to get our training completed without being rushed.

As I work at Eastbourne station I decided to book the weekend off and turns out that they are just putting in new point motors in at Bexhill, Pevensey and Hampden Park, plus removing the siding at Pevensey.

Theres a few new signal posts been put up already and most level crossings have had their barriers replaced so far.

That makes me wonder if they will make the self acting trailing points at Willingdon junction motorised and have them temporary controlled from Hampden Park on a lever or a switch (CDB 14?) or just leave then until April?

The plans I have show its going to be motorised, which will mean more will go wrong. Theres been no problems with the self acting points. Not like they "wrong road" anything from Eastbourne to Pevensey / Polegate.

Although i'm not aware of any bad things with self acting points.

Is it a panel like Three Bridges is currently or is it a new system?

The East Coastway is moving to Three Bridges Rail Operating Centre (ROC) as a workstation, but now delayed until Spring 2014.

The Arun Valley (as discussed earlier [Horsham to Arundel]) is being added to Panel 7 at the existing Three Bridges Area Signalling Centre (TBASC). And again this has been put back until Spring 2014.
NB: Panel 7 was the addition into TBASC when Horsham signal box closed.

I know that the self actors become TEB 713 point and without walking over to Willingdon Junctin to check myself, I was just wondering if they were or weren't going to motorise them with the rest or wait until April.

As Mr Cooper said its going to be a workstation in the ROC, to be exact a GE MCS workstation.

Training for the Arun Valley should re-start again in the new year.

Moving to the ROC would make more sense for the delay in implementing the re-signalling than what i heard which is that there is only one man in the country who can sign off the level crossings fitted with the new radar system!! Even Network Rail could employ more than one person to do that job...couldn't they!!

New equipment usually gets signed in by the the tecs who test and commission it and it must be the same for MCB-OD. I'm not sure if your talking about the manager at the top of the tree that signs off the scheme plans and risk assessments?

All that us traincrew heard was it was the man who signs off the level crossings, but that's rumours on the railway for you..

Evening all,

Thought I would update this. The resignalling is due to be happening 14/2/15, so if anyone wants any pictures you may want to be quick!

I believe the original delays was something to do with problems with new equipment on the OD crossings (some sort of receiver?), which has now been sorted.

If anyone is interested in what the workstation looks like, a video of the ROC opening and our simulator can be viewed here

There have been some minor refinements to the screen design since this video was made but it's largely the same. The MCB-OD control screens are also visible (the four boxes grouped together).

P.S: I apologise in advance for all the adverts!

Less than 24 hours to go. Going to be a sad day on the East Coastway.

Hampden Park signal box is going to be demolished on the 14th. Bexhill, Eastbourne, Polegate and Berwick boxes are saved. Pevensey and Westham box future is looking doubtful.

Went down to the area on 4th February on a day off from work. Departed home (Bristol) at 0620hrs, got back home at 0100hrs. Was allowed in at 4 of the boxes (not sure if it is safe to say on here which boxes I got in at: you never know if NR might be prowling the forums). Suffice it to say the number of photos in total (external and, where applicable, internal) obtained at each location was:

Berwick: 51 photos
Bexhill: 26 photos
Eastbourne: 30 photos
Hampden Pk: 24 photos
Pevensey: 24 photos
Polegate: 11 photos

So 166 photos. I also obtained a video clip at one of the boxes. Note that the number of photos at each box is not necessarily indicative of whether I was allowed in or not. A good day out in all.

Dave

Well sadly the boxes will have closed at, or by, 2200hrs last night, 13th February 2015, and it was RIP to Bexhill SB (1876-2015), Pevensey & Westham SB (1876-2015), Berwick SB (1879-2015), Eastbourne SB (1882-2015), Polegate SB (1883-2015) and Hampden Park SB (1888-2015).

The good news in regards of Eastbourne is that one of the signalmen I talked to that day said there are plans to retain the internal fittings and make the box into a museum. I very much hope that is true and that it happens. But as I udnerstand it, Hampden Park gets demolished today (14th February) to allow for alterations to the level crossing while Eastbourne, Bexhill and Berwick will remain. I believe the future for Pevensey SB is uncertain.

A final thought: it was perhaps ironic that a piece of equipment which had probably switched Bexhill SB in and out every day since it first opened in 1876 should be the piece of equipment which finally closed it in 2015 after 138 years. Bexhill SB's in & out switch, which was the last in Kent & Sussex and which can be seen to the left of the block bell in this photo, remained operational to the end.

A quote from a reply to a photo I posted on a Facebook group: "As the last bells ring out, and you close the door for the last time, when you go to turn out the light--stop for a Second, turn round and tap the old girls door jamb -with a little Pat "well done. Well done" (Dominic Beglin)
