TCF blocking train's destination 28/03/2015 at 17:34 #70451

Hi all,

I've got the failure sliders set up to their highest for a bit of a challenge and I've got a track circuit failure that's occurred blocking access to Effingham Jctn / Guildford. I've got a Guildford-bound train just approaching Epsom.

I can hold it there causing untold delays, or I can try and turn it round - but I don't know what its next working is.

Any ideas? What would you do?

Possible solutions:

* If you're "playing control" you can try turning it round. I would look for trains that could feasibly be its next working, or (if the timetable is new enough) look in real-time trains and work it out manually. Rules might help you here depending on how comprehensive they are in this particular timetable, if there is a rule involving another train entering a certain time after that train leaves, it's probably the next working.

* Just play "naive signaller" and hold it until the fault clears. I would probably do this if I'm feeling lazy if I'm not really playing seriously (depends what mood I'm in basically), but this is obviously far from ideal and not particularly realistic.

* Simulate hand cranking of points. In the incident control panel (F11), you can select the points that you need tho change and manually crank them. Then talk the train past the signal at danger. For realism, I'd wait a certain period of time before hand-cranking as the engineer has to get down there first...

Most expedient thing to do is for it to terminate at Epsom and send the stock to the up siding.

It's roughly 30 mins from Epsom to Guildford, so double that and allow extra for turnaround time at Guildford and you should be able to work out the next working.

If you have an inbound train stuck on the other side of the block, you could do a set-swap so that they pick up each other's workings. As a variant on that, see what train is due next from Guildford, mark it as entered and turn the outbound train around to form that working.
