Hi, recently I have seen two trains on separate occasions with a black 'X' displayed in the window of the cab.

Does anyone know what this means? Thanks

"Non-multi" - it is to stop units being joined together when there is a defective coupler on a set.
When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A

The black X is the notice to drivers that the unit has a non-multiple restriction on that driving end, i.e. it cannot be coupled to another unit due to a defect or otherwise. It is placed in the second man's front windscreen so it is visible to the driver when he/she approaches it in another unit.
