Hi All Just a quick question. In the old Portsmouth Signalling Centre (the subject of this sim as opposed to Havant ASC), did the three Fratton, and the Southsea DCS slots really time out? The reason I ask is, having been a Signalman myself over here, I would want to have permission or a slot before I got a train in a position where if I could not get the required permission I would end up snookering myself. So, for DCS especially, I would want to have the slot before I stuck the train on the Back Road, so that if there was a muck up, I still had options to come up with a plan B. So, the question of slots timing out kinda plays into how I would personally signal my trains. If the sim is accurate, no drama. I will have to treat it as a quirk of the panel. If it isn't, could we look at changing it? Hope to be enlightened either way Andrew Sorry guys, I am in the business of making people wait! Log in to reply |

All is explained in the Wiki which says: [i]Access to Fratton Yard and Fratton CSD is controlled by slots released by the Fratton Shunt Frame operator. In real life these slots will self cancel after 30 seconds if the signaller does not set the route into the respective yard (see the Timetable section for details of where various locations are), however in the simulation this time has been extended to cancel the slot after two minutes. Slots are requested by placing a call to the shunter. The Fratton Depot slot corresponds to Fratton CSD, L/E to trains approaching the London (i.e. Portcreek Jn) End of the yard and C/E to Country (i.e. Portsmouth) End. Log in to reply |

I did mean to sound critical - there is a huge amount of information and data out there and it is easily missed!

Also probably doesn't help having been a Signalman in New Zealand in the past. No doubt we did things a bit different to the UK, and I keep thinking about what I would normally do in a given situation. That has become apparent in the odd multi session where other players have wondered what I was doing, which was what I always did when I was a Signaller! So, next question - what's the reasoning behind this feature in real life? I don't think I've heard of timed slots anywhere else in the UK.

There was somewhere else in the UK that I worked on a few years ago that had timed slots but for the life of me I can't remember where! It's an SSI area, controlling access to a depot, that much I do know! As for why, not sure really. SimSig Boss Log in to reply |
