21 posts 		Microsoft are offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 (I at present run 7).

Is SimSig compatible with 10?

916 posts 		Without trying anything out, I would be very supprised if (A), Microsoft changed their code enough to make things not work. Just think how many other programs would then not work, and (B), As SimSig is now a largely paid for product, imagine how many unhappy customers they'd have if things didn't work with it, especially as Windows 10 shall soon become the "norm"

476 posts 		Just had a Windows icon pop up on my task bar offering me a free upgrade to W10. I'm also running 7 at the mo and think I might hang on for a while to see if any adverse reports appear regarding it working with other software, especially Simsig.
Don't recall seeing a Windows 9 though? That's probably me being picky.

Firstly there was no Windows 9, and secondly, I would highly recommend signing up for the upgrade as this is a very short term offer being made. not sure how long exactly, You won't have to upgrade (as I understand things) straight away after release.

1461 posts 		The rumoured reason for a lack of Windows 9 is the number of developers who used the logic that "any Windows version starting with 'Windows 9...' must be either Windows 95 or Windows 98", and so wrote their programs to either run differently or not at all if that string of text was detected. Some people might remember the release of XP, and how many programs would refuse to run on it, because they believed it to be Windows NT due to its version number.

Regarding Windows 9: I understand they want to get away from the (relative) failure of Windows 8. There's also murmurings that the number 9 is unlucky in Japan and they don't want to lose that market.

Whatever the reason, Microsoft themselves are terming it as "the last Windows". Decent article on the matter here: http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/7/8568473/windows-10-last-version-of-windows

Going from a super, super sleek environment to the blocky world of SimSig will be a bit of a shock, mind!

To be fair, Windows XP *IS* Windows NT, or at least an evolution thereof. It just had a lot more compatibility with Windows 9x software, I believe a little moreso than Windows 2000, which is also in the NT family. Unfortunately, a lot of software was of the opinion that "9x good, NT bad" without being any more discriminant than that.

True enough but with Office 365 it is described as exactly that up front.

MS may well move to a subscription model over time but I don't think even they would offer a "free" upgrade and then start to charge after a while.

This "reason" does not stand up to scrutiny, MS would just put in a shim.

For fun stories of said shims MS have had to put in to correct developers' bad behaviour, I strongly recommend Rayomnd Chen's "Old New Thing" blog - in fact here is an example of more or less exactly this problem (although not a shim being used as the solution in this case) from a couple of decades ago.

Windows 2000 is windows version 5.0
Windows XP is windows version 5.1 (xp and 2k used virtually same based code but with tweeks and improved interface and is also why a lot of 2k drivers worked for XP) {64bit editions of XP are versions 5.2}
Windows vista is windows version 6.0
Windows 7 is windows version 6.1
Windows 8 is windows version 6.2
Windows 8.1 is windows version 6.3
Windows 10 is windows version 10.0

if you go to the command prompt and type winver a pop up will apear. and it will show the version and product name
microsoft use a marketing name more for consumers and versions for software/driver developers.


It's interesting that microsoft wouldn't do to XP what it is now doing for Windows 10.

XP in my opinion was and still is one of the best OS's out there, just a shame they didn't develope the 64bit edition better for the home user

:doh Whoops i forgot to put since NT 4,

NT4 and earlier on the NT side of windows matched up.

1 posts 		I am running SimSig using VirtualBox with Vista as a guest in Linux Mint 17 if it doesn't.

I've been seriously considering whether to take the upgrade or to follow my instinct and use a single boot Linux box, but if you want to upgrade Windows, just try and find an OEM Vista licence from somewhere.

386 posts 		No need for VirtualBox. WINE runs SimSig pretty well, and it’s much less resource-intensive and more tidily integrated into your Linux desktop than a full VM.

5 posts 		I only have one problem with Windows 10. This is regarding the loader, I cannot seem to update anything. I even turned off my firewall and the loader will still fail to update.

Anyone else with this problem?

I think you are "jumping the gun" a bit. Windows 10 has not officially been released for general use unless it occurred yesterday.

I had the same problem when I briefly tried the "technical preview" it turned out the account created on setup isn't actually an administrator so struggled to install or run updates on a lot of programs. Maybe that is the issue
