At 0620-ish Sim time just after 5J61 enters at Winchburgh Jn I get a "xxxx" on the up line which then goes towards Linlithgow in the down direction.

5J61 runs as normal.

Just as a follow up I found the errant train to be 5B05 which for some reason hadn't stepped it's location from Greenhill Upper Jn and when it got to Winchburgh Jn it reversed down the up line. Fixed the problem by setting the location to Winchburgh Jn and made sure the train was heading "up". It left the sim OK after that.

Did you send it Main line on the E&G or via the booked route- it makes sense if you did send it E&G- There should be stepping code to allow diversions which I'll have to look at but what I think has happened is a combination if individual events that just confused the train.

The train is booked to stop at Winchburgh which normally does not matter it'll fall off anyway but because that route through Greenhill trains go from Up > Down > Up then as the TT did not step then when it got to Winchburgh it thought it was still at Greenhill where it should go Down- so that's exactly what it did.

Hmmm, methinks I sent it via Falkirk High not Grahamston so that would be what I did wrong. I'm pretty sure I just saw Winchburgh Jn as the exit point and routed it through Falkirk High in error. This is something I will have to remember, thanks for the help.

Good.......at least that explains that. Normally trains have to tick of the locations in order and it has always been teh case that if for some reason it fails to tick a locations off it just keeps looking for it and never steps up. What it is possible to do is add specific code to say if you pass this point and are still looking for location X step the timetable to location Y- by it's nature such coding can't always cover every situation so you may have to step up timetables elsewhere or in similar circumstances.

Is it possible that a stepping problem would cause a train to stop at the last external berth before Winchburgh Junction?
It is 06:27 and I have seven up trains (all ****) standing at external berths from Linlithgow to Winchburgh. 1R02 is heading for the last controlled signal (red) before Linlithgow with 7G11 hot on its heels.
Is there any way of clearing the blockage beyond Linlithgow?
I started the simulation in single player mode, and all other exit points a working OK apart from the reversing Fort William sleeper.

As it is almost the same sim time as my experience of this I suggest that you look at the train list and you will see 5B05 which is the problem train.
I am guessing you did what I did and route it via Falkirk High instead of the correct route via Falkirk Grahamston.
To fix it set the location of 5B05 to Winchburgh Jn and make sure the direction is "UP". It will then wend it's way to Winchburgh Jn and leave the sim.

Appreciate the info as both times I've started the sim, 5B05 corrupted towards Winchburgh shown as stood at GF1. Second time I deleted it and the queue of trains started to move off, but presumably that means I will lose a return working at some point.

Thanks to Flymo & Northern Warrior for comments.
5B05 appeared in the train list at Linlithgow, so as suggested I removed it and the following train has reached the Linlithgow berth replacing the four stars. This would appear to have solved the immediate problem, but I will have to be more careful with routing in future.

I have been trying to resist it but I feel a dose of half speed coming on!

No need to remove it, if you do have a problem like described above just make sure it is going 'up' and set the next location to Winchburgh Jn. It will then leave the sim of it's own accord when it reaches Winchburgh.

I don't think the Sim in stand-alone has that sort of rules applied but in-chain you may lose a complete diagram.

The problem is not difficult to resolve, there are several options-
Edit the timetable to have Winchgburgh a passing point (this is actually an error in the timetable)

Manually step the timetable up via f2

Reverse the direction of the train- though that may still cause a problem when it gets to Winchurgh a second time- don't know- so also abandon timetable.

Same goes for Wesaterton.

Well, it shows how reading the forum before posting helps, had 6 trains stacked up at Winchburgh Jn and 5B05 was the culprit.

Note for future - don't panic - read the forum!
