Exeter 2015 SX Timetable Released 10/08/2015 at 02:30 #74946

Hi All

I'm pleased to advise you all, that this timetable is now uploaded and ready for release.

Description of this timetable
This is a 2015, standard weekday timetable for the Exeter Panel area. This is timetable is fully compatible, and able to be chained with Westbury (already released), and Bristol (when released). The Passenger workings have been taken from the Working Timetable of December 2014, with First Great Western stock allocations based on unit diagrams. These are a snapshot of one day however, and are only intended to represent what actually happened on that one day, so these may not be entirely representative of daily operations. South West Trains stock allocations are based off the Carriage Working Notice. Freight services have been derived from June 2015. The timetable has been tested to ensure the Passenger and Freight workings do not conflict.

Two start times are provided, 00:00 and 04:30. On the 00:00 start, 446 services are in this timetable. This is broadly in line on previous timetables, although there have been a few service changes in that time. You will need to pay close attention to all timetables, in particular, the Freight services especially if they are running early. Exeter will often jam up with trains, so you will need to think ahead!

This timetable has been written by Andrew James (kaiwhara) and Tim Squires (Temple Meads). We both wish to thank those who have supported us in getting this, and other timetables to completion.

As usual, if any errors or issues are found, please add comments to this thread, and we will address them.

Passenger Services
First Great Western

First Great Western operate almost all services through this area. The service pattern is mixed, with the Long Distance services from the Far West to London, and rural services centred on Exeter itself. Many of these trains split, join or shunt at Exeter. Whilst there is a basic pattern of services, there are variations or additions to this on most hours. This is marked on the train description. The basic pattern is:

  • 1tph London Paddington - Plymouth (with some extensions to Penzance).

  • 1tph Taunton - Cardiff Central

  • 1tph Exmouth - Barnstaple.

  • 1tph Exmouth - Paignton.

  • 1tph Newton Abbot - Paignton.

  • Occasional services between London Paddington and the Far West via Bristol Temple Meads (generally, but not always to Paignton).

A wide variety of 143, 150, 153 and 158 units are used in a variety of combinations, and HST's.

South West Trains
South West Trains operate services on the West of England Line via Yeovil. Generally, these trains shunt to and from the New Yard. The basic pattern is:

  • 1tph London Waterloo - Exeter St Davids.

  • 1tpd Axminster - Exeter St Davids. (Peak Service)

Almost all of these are 159 class units, along with the odd class 158.

Cross Country

Cross Country operate regular North East - South West services through this area. Generally in the South West they terminate at Plymouth, with a few early morning and late evening extensions to Penzance. These commence at a variety of places in the North East and Scotland. These services are further supplemented by periodic services from Manchester to Paignton, which are in turn an extension of the hourly service normally terminating in Bristol. The basic pattern is:

  • 1tph Newcastle / Leeds / Edinburgh / Glasgow / Aberdeen - Plymouth / Penzance

  • Occasional services between Manchester Piccadilly and Paignton.

These services are formed by Class 220 and 221 Multiple Units, along with four HST's on the busiest services.

Freight

Freight is fairly infrequent conveying a variety of commodities to various destinations across the south of the United Kingdom.

Other notes
You must read the timetable carefully, as trains will often not take the route you expect, or hold for another train to run ahead of it. This is particularly important for freight services, especially if they are ahead of time. Exeter will often jam up with trains, so you also need to be prepared to re-platform trains if things run a bit pear shaped.

We hope you find this challenging and enjoyable.

If there are any issues or errors, please let us know in this thread.

Andrew James (kaiwhera) and Tim Squires (Temple Meads).

Sorry guys, I am in the business of making people wait!

Not so at all. Release doesn't mean approved - it's not in the downloads section for Exeter timetables yet. If there's a better way for SimSig to give itself a bad reputation, I can't think of one.

The timetable writers must feel awfully discouraged by this. Please amend the original post to make it clear to all that it is not available yet. How long before it's actually APPROVED? Weeks? Months? I for one won't hold my breath if previous experience is a guide.

I read "Ready for release" as "Awaiting to be approved".

Your post comes across as insulting and frankly very hostile.

I have however for the timetable writers benefit sent a message to the right person to make them aware something is awaiting approval.

I've never known an upload take weeks or months for approval, please don't be so dramatic.

Agree completely with you Karl, it's usually no longer than a week and Max FYI when timetable writers upload a tt, it says if it has not been approved in a week to email / message the named person, so your weeks and months statement about waiting for approval is frankly a load of rubbish and almost as dramatic as the aussies 1st innings in the 4th test

It used to be that an email was generated telling admins that an upload was waiting - that has not happened for many a month/year for reasons that are unknown to me.

Incidentally it's not just me that can approve, AndyG can and maybe other moderators but I'm not 100% sure which.

On the 04.30 start 1L20's schedule suggests it should depart from platform 3 but seeds on platform 1.

It should depart from platform 3. This is a seeding issue.

It's amazing how two of us can stare at this for hours, days even, and run through the timetable generating snag lists and closing issues off, and completely miss something stupid like that :pinch:

Well I'm glad my earlier comments attracted some attention. Peter Bennett's suggestion of an email is the sensible solution.

Now that the timetable is available, what's the cure for 1L20's seeding problem? Every user (who knows how to) manually edit its TT? Or wait for v1.1? There could be other errors too. Maybe I should wait for the cures to come out before downloading it. Typical teething problems found in many v1.0 software, not just here.

Maybe someone could spell out exactly how to fix it so we users can get on with enjoying it.

You tell me? It's only taken two of us 10 weeks and probably 150 hours between us to fix a big list of bugs (yes I still have that list of what we fixed in case anyone really was bothered), and as bugs go, compared to some of the ones that I myself fixed, this is a very small one...

Or if it bothers you to the point that you don't enjoy it, then there is a big selection of others to choose from...

Sorry guys, I am in the business of making people wait!

Or you can just put up with it. It's not an issue, just a slight annoyance. It will not affect simplay.

Frankly it really isn't an issue Max. I would have thought all the hours you've played Exeter you would know that trains from P1 can take all the routes that those from P3 can, and therefore by having a train seed on P1 instead of 3 in no way makes the timetable unplayable. Perhaps a thank you Andrew and Tim for all of the hours of hard work you have given of your free time to produce a tt on my favourite sim in your post wouldn't have gone amiss. But I guess you really can't please some people.

Been there done that :doh

Haven't had a chance on yours and Tim's western's yet as still finishing a few writings. Do appreciate all the time you've both put in for everyone's enjoyment, I know what it's like doing this writing lark, hours upon hours locked away in a darkened cell, crossing off each train you enter as one less bugger to put in, only to analysis and test and find bugs that really test you, trying to work them out. Appreciation is always warmly welcomed but often forgotten by some, so thanks to you and Tim for all of these you've written recently

Small problem with the timetable for 1C91.
The COWLEY BRIDGE JN should be 20/06 (passing time) instead of the 20:06.

Not an issue unless there is a train closely following.

A most enjoyable timetable

Try again, it is there under "Exeter Weekday 2015 V4.5.2".

(You could also sort the list by "Submit Date", which brings it to the top of page 1)

Hi, Max. Good to see your name again. The TT is hiding towards the foot of the third page of Exeter TTs in the Download section at http://www.SimSig.co.uk/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=0&func=select&id=12&orderby=2&page=3.

Saturday eXcepted.

Normal railway shorthand in the UK is M/T/W/Th/F/S/Su for the days of the week and O/X for Only/eXcepted. In Pascal's heritage timetables you get lots of trains with UIDs like 1A00MTWO or 1A02TTHX to indicate the days of the week that the train runs.

Another thing you sometimes see is EWD (Every WeekDay) which has the same effect as SuX. Normally the Sunday TT is a totally separate piece of work compared with the weekday TT so it usually assumed that trains marked as for example MX are by implication also SuX.
