One for the Developers but if you've already got the signalling diagrams for your sim, is it difficult to then add a banner repeater to a specific signal or even remove a banner repeater?

Difficult no not really.

Banners are a strange one though, just because it's there on the ground it doesn't always mean that it's even drawn on the panel. And even if it is drawn on the panel it doesn't mean it actually indicates on the panel.

As Headshot says. Generally though, with CBIs banner repeaters are usually shown on the screens and whether they're lit or not. Not always. Some even show dual banner repeaters with each proved lit separately.

I'm always amused by the way that banner repeaters go back to a "danger" indicator once a train has passed them, but before passing the signal that they repeat. Strictly speaking, it's momentarily showing the "wrong" aspect".

I personally would say that is a safe and correct method of working, Lets imagine a nice thickly lined track on a 60 degree curve and a train fails between with four coaches past the signal (the replacement block joint for which is 6 coaches past the signal) which is 15 coaches in advance of the banner. Now ignoring the rules side of recovery of a failed train, which is safer by giving more of a reminder to the driver of the assistance. A banner indicating that the signal is showing the line is unoccupied (which the track that returns the signal to danger actually is) or a banner showing that there is danger ahead. In the words of a certain recently deceased Liverpool female entertainer the choice is yours......

Not all of them do, of course - it depends on the age of the installation.

Generally speaking older installations don't return to danger with the train between it and the banner. Unless a separate track circuit was already in place between the banner and the signal.

Newer installations almost always go back.

Sorry but it's little to do with age and more simply to do with "is there a track section joint in a convenient place?". Just tallied a modern, late 2000s installation and only 30% go back. Banner repeaters aren't far from the signal they represent so the chances of a separate track section existing is only more common in stations with pointwork, and I suspect the cost of providing an additional section purely for the purposes of replacing a banner is simply not worth it.

I must admit I thought it was a standard to now have a track between a Banner and the Main signal hence my reference to age of installations. Having checked it's only a requirement when the signal it applies to has routes that approach release from red.

An incident occurred in Ipswich (QLD, Australia) involving a Repeat Signal that was not designed to restore after passage (and a running shunt). If you refer to the diagram below.... (Please excuse the crudity of this model. I didn't have time to build it to scale or paint it  )

Train 2 (passenger EMU) arrived from Brisbane and terminated on (curved) platform 4. As it was waiting table to return to Brisbane, a light engine (Train 1) was signalled out of the yard behind IH5. IH15, by this time, had been cleared for Train 2 to depart, thus resulting in Repeat Signal IH15P showing a clear aspect. The Signaller then cleared shunt signal IH5 to IH15 (I can't recall why he didn't send it via P2 or P3). Train 2 moved off then saw IH15P showing clear so started accelerating. Fortunately it stopped before running up the bum of Train 2. As a result of that incident, IH5 was converted into QR's first absolute shunt signal (the Signaller got a hefty kick in the arse too).

EDIT
NSW colour light Repeat Signals have a Red aspect to prevent just such an incident occurring.

Perhaps QR should look into Huddersfield controls!

I thought that, but is it generally applied to routes from shunt signals? A quick test on SimSig suggests not.

One point worth noting - until that incident occurred, all QR shunt signals would clear onto an occupied track unless it is a running shunt (called a "Leading Shunt" in QR) which has been cleared as part of a running route. This is why I used to get confused with Simsig when certain shunt signals would not clear onto an occupied track (and designed that way).

The Signaller then cleared shunt signal IH5 to IH15
In current UK (and SimSig) practice that would be forbidden by Huddersfield Control for just this reason.

("waiting table"?)

"Waiting timetabled departure time" (verbal).

Else "Waiting time" (ambiguous) or "waiting TT" (written).

In reality, "Waiting for the Guard to:-
a. Go for a wee walk
b. Have a smoke (½km walk each way to a smoking zone)
c. Buy a pie for the return trip
d. Put a bet on".
(Strike out that which does not apply).

:yikes :doh
