Hi Guys,

I was just wondering if there was any more scope for me producing some tutorial videos for the community.

Does anyone think there is a need or any requests?

I love the sim and would happily devote some of my time in making a range or tutorials from the most basic to more advanced ones.

It comes after some good feedback from my current tutorial on Lever Frames, which only came about after an issue on a hosted session.

Thoughts....

Definitely I think there is a place for tutorials, especially signalling basics for those not already on the job. The wiki is important for sure, but I feel it would help supplement the wiki if there was a demonstration of having it all put together in motion.

Could start with the very basics like identifying the components of the signalling diagram on Royston or other straightforward sims (track, points, signals, stations, LCs etc), and then address the things that people seem to have the most trouble with:

- using level crossings without being penalised

- understanding the timetable: how to judge the correct order of movements at busy junctions, how to tell stopping vs. 'set-down only' vs. non-stopping trains, direction changes

- dealing with yards and depots, slots vs phoning ahead (and how to manage multiple freighters to the same location i.e. don't commit to them until you're sure the yard can take them, regardless of timetable)

- identifying and safely dealing with failures (including using the Incident Control Panel, and when using it is cheating)

Do you mean something like the YouTube videos linked from this thread from 2013? I haven't included the links but there are other similar threads from before 2013 if you search for "tutorial". The YouTube videos are also linked from the Wiki on this page. It would be good if new tutorials were targeted at areas not covered in the existing resources and the tutorials added to the Wiki when created.

A lot of people seem to have trouble just downloading all the files and sorting out their folder structure properly. And when someone asks for help on the forum, the advice given is often basic and assumes a level of knowledge not present. And that's before you even signal a single train!

Some good suggestions here I'll have a look at what's about and create a few vids where I think a gap can be filled.

Sorry Chrisdmadd but the videos are unviewable due to low resolution . And I assume no voice instruction just the mouse pointer moving around. A good effort but any chance of increasing the qualitity?

Is that the quality you have YouTube set at? I've just watched it on an iPad in full screen and it's perfectly readable to me.

Yeah, something like that. I hadn't seen either of those before. Thanks for the link.

Hi Don

The current tutorials don't have voice over, they have captions explaining each step, these captions only show on desktop PCs at the moment.

As for quality these are recorded and uploaded in the highest quality possible 1080p.

You may be viewing on a mobile device and on 3G which would affect the quality. Double check the quality settings when your viewing and select 1080p.

The next video tutorial showing users how to add new timetables is almost ready and will be available tomorrow once it's uploaded.

I will take the advice on board and do voice overs as soon as I can.
