Is this prototypical? (I assume yes)

Is this allowed? (I assume no)

If I'm correct about the above, what's the point in the auto IRL?

On this issue, speaking generally, it's not unusual for something to be provided and then immediately marked out of service or otherwise inoperable. More commonly, rules change change over the years and something is no longer allowed but it's too costly to modify the interlocking.

The slot is what's known as "persistent" - the slot remains active until manually cancelled by the signaller. The same is true of the slot between Victoria Eastern and West Hampstead at City Thameslink, among others.

The only reason for it to be cancelled would be to run a wrong-direction move, which are pretty rare. (Indeed, if it weren't for the bi-directional working, the slots wouldn't be needed at all!)
