Filton Bank Four Track programme

As part of plans to modernise the railway, Network Rail will increase the number of tracks between Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway. This will mean greater passenger capacity and will allow maintenance to be carried out without disrupting services.

Vegetation clearance started in February 2015 to progress with civils enabling and infrastructure work.

Work started 3 September 2015 on Bonnington Walk road bridge in Lockleaze. In order to prepare for electrification of the line, we need to raise the parapet to 1.85m to maintain the safety of pedestrians.
We will be doing this by removing the current coping stones (which are being given to Bristol City Council to recycle), adding on an additional 4 layers of bricks and then finishing off by adding new angled, anti-climb coping stones.
We will have to close one lane of the road for five weeks on each side, so a total of 10 weeks of work.

I left Bristol about 26 years ago in the days when Parkway was still a 2 platform station with no option for late running connections given the amount of land there because of the old Stoke Gifford sidings I could never understand why it wasn't dramatically expanded.

It will be good to see it as 4 track, and can see how it would make operations easier. Didn't see any mention though of possibly opening any new stations along the route.

Out of interest, and slightly off topic, at this time, were there still sidings on the Up side, or were they all on the down?

Work has been slowly grinding on on this project for a few years now - the first major thing to be done was the replacement of the surviving GWR footbridge at Stapleton Road station with a modern electrification-safe one, which was completed (at least as far as the existing pair of tracks go) nearly three years ago.

So "modernise" means going back to how it was in the early 1980s? The quadruple track was reduced to double in the mid eighties. According to wikipedia this was to increase speed; but I seem to remember comments about a weak bridge at the time.

Peter.

Yes, I understand it was because of the viaduct over Stapleton Road and the River Frome. Which is still standing today, just rather rustier. See: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.4682547,-2.5666911,3a,75y,272.17h,102.64t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sVZ2nxV1pgzITv31BBQk1bQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

I remember regularly going up Filton Bank in the 1970's on a Plymouth - Cardiff (behind a 52) with the night sleeper to Glasgow/Edinburgh running right beside us (they were timed to leave TM at the same time - and usually did!).

It would be lovely to see a 'Western' at BTM today my childhood was spent 'spotting' Warships, Westerns and Hymeks and a few Peaks, 47's and 50's thrown in, it was amazing to watch the prototype HST going through the remains of Coalpit Heath station from what was called locally the ha'penny bridge - in those days you could stand right above the track looking through the railings (no boarded up bridge sides then) to get a blast of diesel exhaust as they tracked round to Westerleigh junction.
