It's even better when the trains are running opposite each other and at high speed, although you couldn't capture it like that.

It is that tight around a lot of places in the UK where similar track configurations exist. I have seen reversible lines where two trains approaching each other seemly go to crash head on, only to divert onto adjacent lines at the last second. One place this happened was at North Kent East Junction near New Cross in London [No 2 Reversible(Down) to No 1 Down or Greenwich line and No 2 Reversible (Up) to No 3 Up] . When London Bridge ASC first opened to traffic, Management were so concerned about this move they issued a document to Drivers highlighting it. Drivers must have a lot of faith in the Signal Interlocking in these situations, I bettheir hearts skip a beat or too. Professionalism mean nothing around a bunch of Amateur wannabees! Train operators can see how the points are set you know If there is anything to be worried about it is a sideswipe because a car's lateral movement is a function of suspension components that can become worn. Also, sideswipe conditions can exist for years without being "detected". I know of several instances locally where it simply took decades for two trains on two specific routes to pass with sufficient rocking action to cause an impact. Log in to reply |

I'm quite sure that the American railroad engineers have very closely measured the tolerances of track geometry coupled with knowledge of maximum train speed through those junctions to ensure that no two trains touch each other as they rattle through the point work, (at least I think I am 99.9% sure) The camera angle probably makes it look a lot worse than it in actuality is lol

On the approaches to Salford Crescent, the two lines from Manchester merge just outside the station, and the two platforms are bi-directional. I've been on a couple of trains from Victoria that have been sent wrong-line into the station, while a second train has been entering from the Piccadilly direction. Although the two tracks are quite a distance from each other, I imagine it's a scary experience for the ex-Piccadilly driver when he suddenly clocks the train bowling down the hill from Victoria!
