As a former local, I would like to offer this pronunciation service to any non-local speakers / southerners / Aussies. Anything ending "ley" is more of a "leh" the an "lee" - so Shipleh, Bingleh, Cononleh etc. Bradford Forster Square: Bratfed Foster Square (note - no "r" in Forster). Frizinghall: Fryzinall Guiseley: Guys-leh Keighley: Keith-leh Ben Rhydding: Ben Ridding Most other places you're probably not going to be far wrong. Also be aware that t'standard Yorkshire operating instructions require that vowels be pronounced either twice as long as is standard or not at all.

Just made me remember something that a person from London chatted to me about while I was on the Keighley Worth Valley Railway. He was saying that in London Keighley is pronounced as key-li but the railway is pronounced as Keith-li. Some think it is 2 different places Log in to reply |

There is an oxymoronic item on Wikipedia entitled Culture of Yorkshire which includes this reference to the way Yorkshire folk conduct themselves: Ear all, see all, say nowt; Eyt all, sup all, pay nowt; And if ivver tha does owt fer nowt – Allus do it fer thissen. Speaking as someone from the North of England (rather than the North Midlands like Yorkshire) I've always found it easy to tell a Yorkshireman. The problem is that you can't tell them much. “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Last edited: 11/09/2016 at 23:45 by postal Log in to reply |

All reminds me of the Thora Hird tale about the Yorkshire stonemason who was commissioned to produce a headstone for a religious lady who had passed on. He was instructed to inscribe the stone with "LORD, SHE WAS THINE". When the family inspected the stone on completion, the inscription read "LORD, SHE WAS THIN". Of course the family complained immediately informing the stonemason that he had omitted an E. He promised to make the change overnight. When the family returned the next day the inscription read "E, LORD, SHE WAS THIN". “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Log in to reply The following users said thank you: Steamer, 320322, AndyG |
