Unallocating Licenses after Windows10 re-installation 11/03/2017 at 22:09 #93612

Today I had to re-install Windows 10 on my laptop computer and I forgot to request that my licenses be unallocated beforehand. Hopefully my recent request for this to be done has been successfull? and I'll be able to re-allocate them fairly soon. I've been told that it was probably something that I did and shouldn't have, that caused all my problems. I've learnt the hard way!!

I would advise anyone who planned to reinstall any operating system (namely Windows©, as I do not know much about OSX or linux) would be to go into License Manager and unallocate your licenses first, that way you don't have to request an unlock.

The misconception on reinstalling an operating system is that it is the same PC, yes the hardware is the same but when installing the OS things change such as system name and other settings which in essance make it a different PC software wise.

If you restore a PC from a backup this does not tend to apply as you are restoring the os to the same setting as before. (As long as it is a current back up from the PC you are restoring)

I few years ago I changed the name of my PC and lost use of sims I puchased. I revert to a backup and it worked fine in regaining use of my sims

So in short

Reinstalling even on same hardware created in essance creates a new PC
Restoring from backup on same hardware would be same PC

Reading through the Forum, it would appear that quite a few people have made this mistake. Unfortunately us 'novices' do all kinds of things wrong without really knowing it and as a consequence mess everything up like I did. Good job I have somebody who can (hopefully) sort it all out!

As long as you've requested the unlock through the license manager there shouldn't be a problem. We're quite quick at sorting it.

Yes, you are. My requests to un-allocate my licenses was actioned fairly quickly. However, my email programme failed to show any emails in either my 'In box' or 'Spam' folder for several hours last night. I re-allocated the licenses this morning and all is now working fine. There are certain odd things happening on my computer at the moment such as Desktop icons re-arranging themselves on a different monitor when the computer is coming out of sleep mode. It's never done that before. Hopefully, I will be getting this all sorted out tomorrow.
