Hi all

Just out of interest I was looking at PC rails newly released "south Devon " sim for comparison. In the notes they described setting a route from St Davids to Central stating that you can only set the route between say E160 and E215 not E160-E213-E215 as E213/313 are only for shunt moves.In a book about the Exeter area resignalling I have, it states that a proceed aspect can only be given from St Davids if the route is clear to the end of Centrals platform(the same as gonig down the bank).I tried a move with "our" Exeter scrolly and found that you can set a route from E160 to E213 with a train occupying the platform at Central i.e bringing the train to a stand on the incline. I was wondering if this is correct?

ESD to Central is uphill, the route downhill won't clear when set as described for Central to ESD ie 312-335, it has to be set onward into P3 or P1. {note the sand drag (SD) by 335, and the catch points after 213 to Exe Cen P3}. The gradient is about 1:37 IIRC, and about 80' height difference.

I'm looking at Exeter at the moment, if anyone can confirm the reality I can fix that quite easily.

The safety precautions built into the route setting for trains coming down the hill from Central to St. Davids are obviously required for safety reasons.

Going up the hill, I don't think there are the same safety issues, but there are operational issues. Given the steep upward incline from St Davids to Central, would you want to be able to set a route which could stop a train while on the incline? You can imagine all of the operational problems if you did that and a train stalled when trying to re-start. Fun for a SimSigger, but a bit of a pain in the rear in the real world.

Going uphill, the driver would only get a Y if route only half set, so could elect to wait at ESD until G shown. Similar situation as Dore Jn E/W Jns on Sheffield?

I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

Many thanks for the replies guys. Thanks Noisynoel, your info will be greatly appreciated!

I'm aware of the Down Waterloo technical restriction, but I was unaware that there may be similar for the Up Waterloo. I quite agree Andy, that from a procedural point of view it would be ludicious to send a train up the bank only to have it held on the incline(I've lived for nearly 20 years in that part of the world and I cannot recall ever seeing anything being held at E213/313).
Its only when I read the blurb with the "other" sim that suggested there was a "technical" restriction on the Up Waterloo, that I played with "our" sim to see if this was so . As I said, in a book I've got,it mentions the Down bank bit but then goes on to say "similarly,the signal routing from St Davids to Central will not clear when the route is set unless the line is clear right through to the london end of the platform at Central.These conditions are designed to prevent a train being brought to a stand on the steep gradiant". This goes to suggest that there is a similar technical restriction on the Up as well as the Down. So It boils down too... Is there really a technical restriction or is it just a procedural one?.

Looking at my photos, there is a pair of buttons at both 213 and 313, one for shunt routes from ExSD, and the other for main routes. So the first comment that setting from 160 to 215 would appear to be wrong. However, none of my photos show just the first route set - they all show either none at all, or all the way through to Exmouth Jn! I have a contact and will try to find out further.

Steep as it is, today's units shouldn't have problems restarting on the hill. In the days of class 50s perhaps so.

I have to say that looking at the book there is a pic, which you can just make out the buttons by 213/313. And your quite right about todays units!

Andy - see this for two drivers who got greens all the way up the bank and ended up very pale. I was at ExSD when they left - they never got above 20mph. Oh dear wot a mistaka to maka.

As yes, happy memories of the Exeter Railfair back in 94 when I was on the Exmouth trip with 80080+80079 stalling (with our coach getting stuck just over the catch points!).

We did not get to the bottom of this before the refresh so as it made sense I have made signal clearing conditional on a through route. It can be reversed at a later date if incorrect.
