I had to go into London yesterday and the usual choas was being experienced with what I thought was no more than a bit of rain but there you go...I knew there was problems on the underground so turned up at New Southgate and caught an earlier train that was running late down to Finsbury Park in order to change and go into the Cross. I discovered a new route whilst waiting at Finsbury Park that intrigued me and wondered if anyone had heard of this one before...."The next train to arrive at Platform 1 is for Kings Cross and Drayton Park".....the station announcer was obviously reading from the Platform indicator as that clearly also showed Kings Cross and then Drayton Park. The 313 duly arrived but did not split and went on it's merry way to.............. who knows........any ideas on this one guys? On the return journey at about midday people at Finsbury Park heading for all stations to Hertford North were being diverted to Stevenage and having to double back from there because of a points failure at Alexandra Palace/Bowes Park...mmmm.....sounds like a good scenario for the next Kings Cross session I have a go at...... As far as I've gathered over on railforums.co.uk, they've changed the system used for annoucements and displays, and it seems that it's got quite a lot of teething troubles. Somebody local could probably give some better information.
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick. Log in to reply |

Aye, the station announcer has...err...had a sex change. Male voice to female voice (sorry, I forget either of their correct names), the same female voice in use at stations like Tottenham Hale, as an example.

At Huntingdon on Saturday the voice was telling people to stand clear on platform 1 as the train was not stopping. http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/sjp/HUN/images/photos/800/o2165-0000047.jpg Log in to reply |

Take Welwyn GC, one night all you heard was stand back, fast train approaching although anyone familiar with the station knows the platforms are on the slow lines there and the fast lines do not have any platforms.

I must say I have been through Welwyn GC a number of times on the "slow" platform lines, doing close to line speed (I think it's in the region of 70mph through there.) So ample reason to stand clear. The displays / announcements at Baldock have recently been updated. Now most London-bound trains appear to suffer a time and identity crisis between Ashwell and Baldock. Most trains seem to change to 1-2 minutes late, before reverting to right time, then becoming a "stand clear" before finally the train arrives and the display shows right time. The "Stand behind the yellow line" announcement is rather apt - given that neither platform at Baldock has one! Log in to reply |

At Woodlesford, 1st stop out of Leeds on the Midland, we get told to "mind the gap between platform and train." When there is no train in sight! When the Scarborough Spa steam was running, we got told to "stand clear as a fast train was approaching" for the steam train that was stopping there. I assume that it was triggered by the 1xxx headcode. It might be that 2xxx overrides the system as they would be the only ones to stop. Log in to reply |
