Newbie question re: screen resolution 22/09/2011 at 15:55 #21183

Hi everybody,

I just downloaded SimSig yesterday and spent a few hours running Royston. I'm thoroughly hooked =)

Anyhow, I have a question: is there any way to force the program to run in 800 x 600? I want to be able to run it on my netbook (without a second monitor/projector), but my netbook's maximum screen resolution is 1024 x 600, and SimSig refuses to launch unless the screen resolution is 1024 x 768, apparently.

Thanks,

m.caober

No, but one can launch it in windowed mode, not fullscreen, the newer (scrolly) sims are windowed only.

Older paged ones and it's a windows registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimSig\Options\WindowedMode = DWORD set to 1

Actually now there's another problem. I set it to run in windowed mode and now it does. The problem is that the window is sized to 1024 x 768, and my max resolution is 1024 x 600, so the margins of the window extend outside the viewable area and I can't see the message box or any of the MNU/MSG/VW buttons because they're off-screen. Do you know of any way to specify window size?

I guessed that one next, the scrolly sims will be better for that resolution. As I guess it's full windows, so, alt+space, m and then use the cursor keys to move the window around, hit return when it's in position.

On that note devs, would it be hard to create an updated scrolly version on Royston? Being one of the simpler sims?

Paged sims can only run in 1024x768. Fullscreen or windowed doesn't matter - a paged sim is always 1024x768.

Scrolly sims automatically resize to fit on your monitor.

Hmm, should do, certainly did here, what exact windows version is the netbook running? As long as you use the key based shortcuts to move the window around you should be able to move it off screen as you wish.

Well, I suppose using the keys isn't quite possible.
In Windows XP, you can move most (1/5 maybe) of the title bar above the top side of the workspace, while Windows Vista and 7 will even refuse to get the window 1-pixel hidden by the top margin.

I suppose your graphics card manager (Intel/AMD/nVidia) can automatically set the screen resolution to 1024x768 when SimSig is launched, or you can also assign a shortcut key to it.
If you don't have the luck to see 1024x768 in the screen options, use Google to look for a hack that enables the resolution on your netbook.

Having a netbook is a bad luck to SimSig.

This is where I prefer linux, one can usually move the window as far off screen as they like... And if the display is maximum 600 pixels it's physically impossible to have 768 pixels, which is why it wouldn't launch in the first place in fullscreen mode as the mode switch to this wasn't possible.

This may be of use as it overrides windows borders if it's decided to enforce (sometimes windows will allow offscreen windows, sometimes not) them: http://code.google.com/p/altdrag/ Just alt+drag to move the window if you use it.

If It's an ATI card in the netbook set the desktop resolution to whatever you want (1024 X 768) then set the screen resolution to the standard size.

A scrolly Royston would be easy enough to produce, particularly if the layout remained unchanged. But it would still need to go through the full testing process.

My netbook is one of those cheap HP ones, the ones that come with Windows 7 Starter and an Intel graphics card (probably built into the motherboard). 1024 x 600 is the maximum allowed resolution, both in Windows Display Properties and in the Intel video card control software that came with the netbook. And the screen's pretty small too. When I run SimSig in windowed mode the window expands larger than the 1024x600 that my screen displays, so when I tried Alt + Space i didn't even see the drop-down menu (probably because it's offscreen O.o).

The scrolly sims work fine though (King's Cross, Edinburgh, etc.) =D

Amendment: Alt+space and then pressing 'n' to minimize the window didn't work either. So somehow I suspect that even though I set SimSig to run in 'windowed mode' in Windows Registry, it's simply running fullscreen and pretending that the screen resolution is 1024 x 728 when it's actually 1024 x 600.

I'm going to try the Alt+drag thing that ewanm89 suggested, though I'm not really sure it'll work now that I know that the Alt+space thing isn't working either. But it's worth trying anyways

Oh my gosh it actually works i stand corrected^^

When I moved it around i didn't see a window frame at all, so that's why the Alt+space thing wasn't working.
