I would like to create a modern timetable for a multiplayer game with the line between Filton Abbey Wood and Narroways Hill Junction under engineers possession, thereby requiring all trains to run via Avonmouth.

Is it easier to write a new timetable from scratch, or modify an existing one?

Depends. If trains are regular at stations (say, every half hour, at xx:15 and xx:45, xx:18 and xx:48) and keep the same stopping pattern (calling at the same stations, etc) and have sequential headcodes (e.g: 2A01, 2A02, 2A03, etc. or 2A01, 2A03, 2A05, etc.) and use the same train (e.g: they're all Class 150s) then you could just create the first train and then duplicate it as needed and that can save you time having to keep on re-entering details. Been mucking around with timetabling in a sim recently and found that once I'd gotten started you sort of get into a flow of things and speed up.

Alternatively if there is already a timetable of the era you're interested in then ask the writer if it's OK to alter it and assuming they say yes then hey presto!

Hope this helps.

from scratch can be a nightmare depending on how busy/variable the service pattern is.
*looks at the piles of used graph paper in the corner*
probably in this case i would modify an existing modern timetable as a what if

I Don't know whether you have looked in the current time rables available to download but there is already a timeable that has narrowways hill jn to filton abbey wood.
That however doesn't stop you from making a new one. I would say that it depends on how you want to write the time tables, if you are editing all the times so that they have a new timetable when they return to their normal route, it may be easier to make from scratch. if your just diverting them and have them running late when they get back onto route then it may be easier just to edit a current timetable

Indeed I have made a fictional modern one with diversions taking place via Avonmouth. It was a pain working out paths and some had to terminate at Bristol Parkway.

Anyway if you wish to modify it you can go ahead and do what you like, or if you wish to do one from scratch, feel free to use my TT as a base for timings on diversion so you don't have to do tests to get passing times. No credits needed.

Hope you don't tear your hair out like I did!

Yeah go ahead mate or start afresh if you wish to have a challenge and use my timings for any service. All the times I used were tested beforehand so they shouldn't have trouble keeping to time if there is no delays.

I have been debating a project like this myself.

There are some very interesting workings at Bristol at the moment on Sundays, where possession trains enter at Bristol East Jn and depart from Clifton Down, with the line through Filton shut and BTM & BPW being used to turn back services. I believe there is switch and crossing renewal occuring as there have been some new shiny IFA switch & crossing wagons in Hinksey Yard last weekend for use on 6X34 IIRC.

Only problem is, with it being a Sunday the TT would be a little thin on the ground (large gap from approx 0130- approx 0630 with no train movements), although offering something different and gives new users to Bristol a chance to experience the "easy life".

When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A
