Wrexham & Shropshire, the open access train operator who operate direct trains daily between Wrexham General and London Marylebone, announced yesterday (26th January 2011) morning that they are to cease operating their services tomorrow (Friday 28th January). This has confirmed the rumours that have already been going around the Internet on many other railway forums, Twitter and probably Facebook too. The official press release from Wrexham & Shropshire is available to view here on their website. There is also a message available to view on their homepage too. Their last train from Wrexham General will be the 13:28 service (Headcode should be 1P23) due to arrive into London Marylebone at 17:30. Their last train from London Marylebone will be the 18:30 service (Headcode should be 1J84) due to arrive into Wrexham General at 22:36. Those of you who have any tickets booked for travel after 28th January should take a look here for the alternative travel arrangements and some contact details. I seem to recall that it has been mentioned somewhere that their customer service centre will remain open beyond 28th January to provide customer support, although it is unclear how long for after 28th January. Personally I think it's a real shame that this has happened and, as someone else said previously somewhere, it is another nail in the coffin for open access (or something like that). When I get the chance, I will find some articles about this that I read elsewhere on other railway related sites and post up links to these sites for people to read. Other peoples thoughts on this are of-course welcome so do post them up if you want to. Cheers, UKTM. Having travel led with them today for my first and final round trip to London with them I was most impressed. Even though the final train runs tomorrow the staff where as good as ever. For whatever the reasons they are a company that I will miss. She did VERY well to hold that announcement together! Not sure I could have done so well! A very sad day in railway history yesterday was! I wanted to go and photograph the last train going thru Princes Risborough, but it was my mother-in-law's funeral in Devon, so for obvious reasons I had to pass the opportunity up. Still, had a bit of compensation: it meant I enjoyed a very smooth and relaxing journey back on a FGW Flying Banana all the way from Tiverton P.W. to Paddington! Log in to reply |
